LapTop help - 09/18/20 02:40 AM

I’ve got a Lenovo Flex 5 that I bought in August 2018, well it has quit working. No idea why. It is strictly for Real Estate. Of course it quits when I’ve got $1.3m in escrow and listing another home this weekend. It’s the only computer in our house that I can use as the other computer is wife’s work computer. Is Geek Squad any good? Or should I just spend the coin and buy a new one? Really don’t want to have to deal with the BS of setting up a computer again.

Those cheapy laptops tend to have slow processors and run low on memory after a while and start running slow.

I used to buy those but figured out it was a waste of money in the long run, better to spend a little coin and have them last.

Step 1: Kick Bill Gates and Windoze out of your computer.
Step 2: Install Ubuntu
Step 3: Learning curve
Step 4: Enjoy a usable computer

Had similar problem a couple months ago, geek squad’s timeline was that they couldn’t look at it for a week. I bought a new one. Costco was cheapest option. All of our company docs and email are web based (Dropbox) so I can access from my phone or iPad if needed.

One trick that works about 50% of the time is to hold down both the power button and reset button at the same time
for about 30 seconds. that's 50% of the time, not always. The reset button is little curved arrow normally above the
number 4 key at the top of laptop.

Re: LapTop help - 09/18/20 01:45 PM

I've had this Gateway a LONG time. I mainly use it to harass you guys, shop and surf. Its been great but its a little outdated. One of the hinges is broke and I need to be very careful opening and closing. Its big and heavy 17.3 Crystal LED-LCD screen. I like the huge screen

1. Scared I'll loose all my music
2. Scared I'll lose all my photo's
3. I've heard that for normal users like me 8GB is fine but to get a Solid State Hard Drive

Was looking at Lennovas, Thanks PIG, NOW think i'll stick with HP

I DON'T need touch screen or bells and whistles, don't game, etc

will spend up to $650

Only warranty I have. Best $100 I spend each year. I once had a problem with my Ipad. Stayed online with Apple for two hours. Geek Squad solved the problem with one click.

Re: LapTop help - 09/18/20 04:36 PM

Prior to my having an external hard drive, I had ALL of our years of photos on the desktop computer hard drive. One day the computer told me the hard drive was dying, so I got an external hard drive and saved everything to it. Rather, I thought I did. Then I got a new computer and had the solid state drives put in it and put those pictures on the new hard drive. The old computer was junked, though I removed both hard drives that were in it and had them on a dusty shelf in the barn.

So, all was good, till it wasn’t. The wife wanted to see the pics from our trip to Italy, but the pics weren’t there and they weren’t on the external hard drive. They were just gone. Then I remembered the old hard drives in the barn. Got them, blew the dust off, and took them to the Geek Squad in Waco. I told them the problem and asked if they could find all our pictures. They had the drives for a few days, sent all recovered data to another solid state drive, and I picked it up and there were all the missing pictures. That impressed me. I now have that annual warranty like Bill does. And it has come in handy several more times. I had some malware on the PC. The Geek Squad removed it remotely.

BigPig: If you want to give me a call I will see what I can do to help you with your situation Robert -aka- dafanman @ TFF 210-426-4474

Buzzsaw: We should have a talk about why you need to back up all of your data NOW!!

And finally, for those of you that don't know Geek Squad will be happy to go thru the contents of your hard drive,
with anticipation of being able to call the FBI.

And this is for everyone, if you have any data on your computer that "matters to you" then you should absolutely be backing that data
up to an external hd, you can get good 1TB external hard drives for as low as $50.00

Shoot me a pm, or call if I can offer and advise or service to any of you.

cheers

They are also known to lose customer data. And, as with any field, there are a few bad apples - in their business they go through your data to see what they might want to keep for themselves (usernames/passwords, credit cards, pictures, etc).

Sorry I just saw this. Geek Squad got it fixed and backed up everything onto a hard drive for me. Apparently I have a plan with them to fix everything for $200 a year, had no idea. Something about a driver was bad.

Lenovo offers a pretty good extended warranty and think up to 5 years, I got it on my last two Levovo and you can get it where it a world wide warranty so if you travel. Black Friday is the best time to get deals on Lenovo and their warranties.

I sent my laptop off to a person on the TFF/THF. I think I paid like close to Geek Squad prices for him to look at it. It came back to me and it wouldn't connect to my wifi anymore. I had to buy an external USB thing to be able to use my laptop.

Lesson learned.......
