2020 Driving Vacation Ideas.... - 09/13/20 02:39 PM

We were supposed to drive to Alaska but the China flu killed that trip. Next though was a western mountain trip....

Thanks to Antifa, BLM, libturds, and arsonists that’s out....

[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]

Looking for suggestions. One thought is a driving tour of Appalachia.....

No interest in going back to the keys this year so Florida is out. Did Maine last year.... Though about a SW desert tour but the bride is less than interested in no trees.... she wants mountains....

So now I'm looking into an eastern mountain trip....Kinda thinking about eastern OK, northern AR, KY, southern OH, western PA, WV, western VA, western NC, and TN as a loop but just not sure....

Something like this....Not the exact route just a general loop. We avoid interstates and large cities...mostly try to stay the hell away from people.

Thoughts about things to do/see along this trip or any suggestions of other places to go are greatly appreciated....no "touristy" places please....natural, scenic, and historical places.

Love the new route. Cathy moved just south of Atlanta from Florida to accept a new job of teaching legal writing. May move out there to be near her when I get too old to go up and down the stairs. Hate the idea of moving from my 50 year old house.

If you leave now you could do a color tour in Michigan and Wisconsin.

Dipping a bit south of Knoxville from Chattanooga will add the Great Smokey Mountains to the trip.

We will...and Cumberland Gap. That map is just a rough representation of the trip. It's still mostly highway (the way it maps). We won't be driving many highways or visiting many cities.

Any other suggestions of stuff to see in those general areas?

It was just up the river from where I grew up. Coolest name of a city I've ever heard. I took they route several times while headed up to Indiana for NSTRA trials.

If you go to the Cape make sure you go downtown and see all the mural painted on the flood wall they put up years ago.

And You want be to far from Stone Mountain Ga just north of Atlanta.

This, used to drive through Stone Mountain Park every day on the way to/from work. It's pretty cool. If you are in Tennessee, maybe Jack Daniels Distillery, I liked it. Chattanooga has Ruby Falls and other tourist traps.

we kinda did that route last summer. didnt go that far north, just to bristol tenn. left dallas and went through ark. to tenn. and on to bristol. saw lots of stuff. came back through the smokey mtns. and did the jack daniels tour in lynchburg. that was interesting to me. our trip was about 2200 miles over 7 days. memphis sux imo, nashville not much better, grand ole oprey is cool, only country music or blue grass i heard live the whole trip was at a mcdonalds some dude playing in the corner for tips. rap and pop music in all the cities.. i can understand why ray wylie hubbard hates the nashville record producers so much.

We did South Dakota this summer and Big Bend last weekend. SoDak was all open except for one reservation. We hit Wind Cave National Park, Custer State Park, Mt Rushmore, and Badlands NP. It was an incredible trip and journey.

The bride is from East Tennessee and we do that trip a few times a year; can’t go wrong with the Smokeys in the Fall! Deals Gap and the Dragons Tail is a must drive!

Anyone have a good website for finding scenic routes, waterfalls, historic sites, etc.

I found a couple but not really impressed with them.

Im not an authority by any means, most of the really good scenic drive sites are members only or pay type sites.
Many you can enter your start & furthest distance point and it will give all sorts of options & info up to making a printable trip map.

So that route you have on the top of the map looks very similar to the route I take to Ohio. Does that include highway 60 across the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers (Cairo Bridge?)

Sorry Sir but we just caught the northeast corner....most of the time was in Colorado....

If I had been in your hood I’d definitely looked you up!

We'll be taking backroads and avoid interstate and cities for the most part. I just used google maps To roughly draw the loop.

You said Stone Mountain was a possibility.
And you wanted waterfalls. Just North of Stone Mountain is the Southern end of Smokey Mountains. I have some friend that live nearby in Jasper and Ellijay. I used to go deer hunting with them and they took this trip and showed me some of these water falls. Beautiful country.
This route is through Great Smokey mountains and its full of waterfalls. Some are drive up and some require a hike to see them. GL
