Floor jacks

Floor jacks - 08/09/20 05:06 PM

Cheap or expensive? Lightweight or HD? Quick jack or standard?

I grew up using either a cheap-o little red one or the huge 3.5T orange and white one. I need to do my wife’s brakes and realized I haven’t jacked a vehicle in quite some time, to the time of I doN’t even own a jack. In y’all opinion, is this a buy once, cry once situation? Because I’ve had nice, expensive ones carp out on me. What do y’all think?

Borrow one from Lefty, doesn't sound like you're going to use one enough

Re: Floor jacks - 08/09/20 05:17 PM

Little side note: I bought the rotors and pads with all new hardware from R1 Brakes online and had it shipped for free to the house. So far, pretty impressed with everything to do with them.

My thoughts too, but don’t wanna kick myself later for it. I don’t think I have much need for the big expensive ones, no more than I’ll use it.

My Harbor Freight jacks are big and heavy and going on 10 years of use. With coupon I think they can be had for $70-$80

Re: Floor jacks - 08/09/20 05:52 PM

Harbor Freight, best bang for your buck. That’s all we used when I was in the tire & wheel/trailer repair business, had about 15 of them. Good jacks. They run specials on them once in a while.

I have a NT 2.1miles from here and a HF that’s 7.5miles. It’s haircut day for the boy so I’ll look at both.

Re: Floor jacks - 08/09/20 05:55 PM

The cheap ones seem to be good for 2-3 uses then they won’t work anymore. Then again my tools see what most would call abuse. I need them to be durable.

Ironton.
Although HFs Daytona Jack's seem OK... My brother bought 2 and they both leak down, he took them back and got an Ironton from Northern tool.

Hahaha. Not on my head. I just learned that if a vehicle is on ramps, not chocked, when you pop the driveshaft loose. . . Said vehicle is no longer in park and rolls you like you would roll a roll your hand over a rolling pin and separates all your insides. Most pain I’ve ever experienced, having ribs ripped away from my sternum.

The noggin, that’s all genetics baby! roflmao

I wouldn’t have told that...proves it wasn’t the car that had inhibited your head. Did your mom ever drop you? bolt

Re: Floor jacks - 08/10/20 03:12 AM

Bought one, swapped the wifey-poo’s brakes. Put all tools up, washed up, went and did a little braking the brakes in.
I’m ashamed they were in the shape they were. Here’s the before/after. That’s not the pad in the top pic, that’s the liner and the caliper just started getting into the rotor. Face/palm. At least it’s good now and saved a TON of $ over paying the RR dealership.

Fathers day and christmas is the time of year to buy tools of any kind.

I have a 3 or 3.5 ton craftsman, came with a creeper and a set of stands for less than most places sell just the jack for years ago of course.

Re: Floor jacks - 08/10/20 10:16 PM

I've pulled brake pads that thin off my first car. I asked the counter parts guy if he brought the right pads when I saw how thick the new pads were.

Those were jack stands, not floor jacks.
