forget the straps, go old school with rope

forget the straps, go old school with rope - 02/13/20 10:16 PM

I went back to carrying a rope in my truck a while back. It's way better than those fussy straps. Go buy yourself a nice 50' rope, keep it in your truck and get 'r done.

If you are not going to cut it you had better learn some special knots. Basic in the Navy taught me about 10 that I still remember and use on special occasions.

You know, I still have about 50 feet of 1/2 inch hemp line I carried on my 1978 service truck hanging in the shed.

Roger that. Always a stack of WB napkins in the console. TP in a Ziploc lives behind the seat.

I carry a 100 ft roll of 1/4 inch cotton Sash Cord, it's been keeping the oilfields running for over 100 years. I'd haul two Trials bikes in the back of the truck plus a cooler chest using 10 ft of 1/4 inch sash cord. nylon stretches too much plus the oil breaks it down, cotton is more durable, ties better and takes the weather better.

I need to do a better job of learning some basic knots. My old man knows a ton of them and I need to start pay attention to him when he's doing his thing.

If you can't tie a knot, tie a lot.

Don't forget the baling wire.

Anchor with a Bowline, go to the middle with a butterfly knot, hay hauler style, come through the butterfly, finish with a slip knot.

And Gorilla Tape. It is superior to duct tape.

Don’t forget the Sheepshank when you have too much rope and the sheet-bend when you need more rope but all you got is a another rope of a different size.

Most importantly, everyone should know how to whip natural fiber rope and fuse synthetic.

Re: forget the straps, go old school with rope - 02/17/20 04:46 PM

Ive got a piece of 1.5 inch diameter hemp rope that is about 100 yards long. We call it the pope rope. My grandfather worked for the county when the Pope came to San Antonio in the late 80's/early 90's. They used miles of that rope to rope off seating areas etc. and when he left and it was over didn't have a use for it. Grandpa took a shart ton of it home and gave some to all his son/son in laws.

Its drug my old truck out of a creek, tractors and lord knows what else. stored inside its still in great shape.
