Lost My Sidekick.....

Lost My Sidekick..... - 11/13/19 01:16 PM

Lost my pizzhound and sidekick of the last 13 years.

Our son saw her get dumped off in a field on a hot August night at 4 weeks of age. He picked her up and brought her home to us as he left the nest leaving for college in 2006. She has been by my side 24/7 ever since becoming very well trained and attuned to commands, finger snaps, hand signs, etc while in the woods/fields at the farm and ranch. Only the 3rd dog I have had in my life.

I am missing her.

I'm sorry for the loss. I've got two dogs with me almost every day.

The best method of healing I've found is to go get a puppy immediately.

I never could do this. I think a person needs to grieve before they can give a new pup the attention they deserve.

Re: Lost My Sidekick..... - 11/13/19 03:21 PM

Sorry for your loss sir.

To many, a dog is just a yard ornament, working tool, food hound, or as I have seen it said here before, 'just a dog". This may be true for many people, was for me basically until I came home from an elk hunt and my wife had bought a 6 week old GS, "Bella". It becomes different when you are with a good pup most hrs of the day, when you both know what the other is "thinking" just by body language and really enjoy each other around.

I am in that camp with you now Tbar, I enjoy "Bella's" company, loyalty, along with her trust and in those regards, she has been more reliable that some "humans" I have dealt with over the years. Is my dog a person, heck no, she is better than some.

Re: Lost My Sidekick..... - 11/13/19 03:53 PM

Without the sorrow of her moving on you would never truly understand what she brought to you and your family. Without the void you would not have memories that will bless you the rest of your life. Only through our pain does true enlightenment come. I would venture a guess that your girl made you a much better person.

Dogs are one of God's greatest creations. They love fully and completely. They don’t care how you look. They don’t care how you smell. They are loyal to a fault. They never complain or have a bad day. They just love and enjoy their families. They are always willing to give you enough memories to make up for their short stay with us.

Sadness and loss are completely different, you did not lose, you gained a complete understanding of what you and your pup shared. We pay for that privilege with sadness.

Everyone handles it differently. I give grown dogs plenty of attention, every day. When I lose one, I have a void in my life I have to fill immediately. And raising a new baby helps me to handle the greif of the loss of the grown dog. Just the way I deal with it.

Dogs are one of the best gifts that we get, but unfortunately time is always working against us with them. We are never really ready for that journey to end.

Sorry for your loss.
