What’s the skinny on Lubbock

What’s the skinny on Lubbock - 11/01/19 01:35 AM

I drive thru Lubbock twice a year on my way to Idaho. From I27 it looks like the town Hasnt changed since it was built. No new homes or businesses. Original buildings how they must have been built from what I can see.

Walmart is out on the highway.

Too much sand.

With my favorite jeans and a cheap guitar I ran off chasing a distant star
If Buddy Holly could make it that far then I figured I could too
I thought happiness was Lubbock Texas in my rearview mirror
My mama kept calling me home but I just did not want to hear her
And the vision was getting clearer in my dream

The deal to me is if I’m there I’m just passing through. The landscape alone would wreak havoc on my mind. (Of course, I’m a piney woods guy so that may have something to do with it.)

That part hardly has. Lots of growth to the south and Ransom Canyon

W, SW, and S of town is growing fast. East side of town is older.

Throw 2 nickels on the ground and stand on em. You can then watch your dog run away for a week. My God, I have never seen such flat land! Only good thing to see is that big arsed hole in the ground north of there.

Friend of mine went to school there back in the late 60's. You had to drive to Pinkies (i think that was the name) just over the county line to buy beer.

Well with tech being there I presume they fixed that after your visit. Never been and no desire to go there.

Not sure what part you drive through but Lubbock has changed alot. I have a bunch of family up there but pretty much only go for funerals. Everytime I'm there I'm amazed at how much its changed / grown. Maybe because I only see it every 10 years or so.

Went up there last December for a sandhill crane hunt. Hunt was fun and I respect that the area has tons of migratory birds but no way I could make it up there. No trees, no water, no thanks.

Yep and west of there was dry, we went to the NM state line to a place called the Bloated Goat.

Oh, there's water. It just tastes real funny.

They say that when the first cavalry soldiers came up on the Llano Estacado, the sheer flatness of it scared them crapless. Those cotton fields give me the heebie jeebies, but I know, just like the stink of oil and gas, that's money.

I went through the southwest end of Amarillo in August and it was growing like mad too.

People from other parts mostly ignore the caprock, flatlanders marvel at it.

Being raised in east Texas, I couldn’t wait to escape the suffocating trees and humidity and live out west. Yeah it’s flat, but the weather and people make up for it.
We took the boys to their first home game a few weeks back vs okie state, and I couldn’t get over how much things have changed. New freeways hotels, restaurants, housing.. yes, the east side is rough, but that town is booming.
I couldn’t live there forever, but I enjoyed the time I lived there.

On a side note, the hunting can be top notch for dove and waterfowl. I grew up chasing blue bill and wood ducks on Rayburn, so I felt like I won the lottery being able to hunt out there.

No the town is "wet" if you will, the college kids don't know what it's like to have to plan and the adventure that ensued of driving out to the strip.

It’s all relative my friend. Hot and muggy vs dry and actually experience 4 seasons. Sure, it can be difficult to play golf on a spring Sunday afternoon with 40mph winds, sure it rains mud sometimes, but IMO, more good days than bad days.

Oh, I know hot and muggy, and I know dry and cold, and everything in between. It’s all personal preference, of course, but the weather up there sucks. I like it dry. Hell, I live in southern Arizona. But what they’ve got up there ain’t exactly pleasant.

I think it's the other way around. When people go back home with me and we see the canyon and whatnot they say it's beautiful, to me, it's home.

We lived there for a few years, there are some really good places to eat and a small Cabela’s there. There is a nice lake out east of town, it’s small but has some trails and good camp spots for weekend getaway.

Lubbock and its people grow on you after you have been there a few years. If you come from the trees, it takes a little time to adjust, but the land does have its beauty and the hunting is excellent.

Spent my first 40 years living in Lubbock. All my family still lives there. I couldn't believe the change (growth) that has happened to the West and South side. But no way could I ever move back. I love having the Tennessee River in my back yard.

I'll take Lubbock over the Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio metro any and every day. 3 months out of the year the weather gets a little "rowdy", other than that, no problemo.

With four cops just waiting to pull you over, talk about entrapment.

Lubbock is where I learned to never leave my window cracked... no matter what. First time, got snow in my truck when an unpredicted storm hit around Easter. Later a sand storm, had a layer of dust all inside my truck that got in every nook and cranny.

One thing about the Plains I like is being able to see weather coming from a distance. I don’t like being unable to see naders until they are right on me.

Honestly I like where Lubbock is going, used to be a dead zone haha. I haven’t dibbled into housing but I’m sure I can get a real nice home on the west side for a good price. I was going to join my uncle and the hotshot company he works for up there but started settling here.

Flat? Yep, I'm originally from Muleshoe about 70 or 80 miles North. We used to say that on a clear day you could see both Lubbock and Amarillo.

I grew up in the area as well and am amazed every time I go back to Lubbock (about twice a year). Lots of new homes, new restaurants, and new businesses on the West and South Side. Population is around 255,000 now, which is 70,000 more than what it was around 1990. Still have lots of friends and family there, so go back at least 2-3 times a year.

Lubbock has changed and grown a ton in just the 15 years or so since I moved there.

Population has increased over 10% in just the last 8 years and expected to gain another 7% over the next 3 years.

Ton of new homes south of town.

Maybe it’s better now. I visited my buddy who went to school there in ‘94 and it reeked. I asked him what that smell was and he acted like it was a normal thing. I remember thinking there was no way I’d go to school there. Maybe I just caught it on a bad day as that’s the only time I’ve been.

I’ve lived there 28 years now. For it to stink, it has to be wet, and then you have to get a perfect ESE wind. Those conditions happen together maybe three days a year, and I’m being honest. It usually lasts only a few hours as the ESE wind never lasts very long.

Smelled them maybe 3 or 4 times in 5 years there. Driving through Post was the worst with the gas!

Re: What’s the skinny on Lubbock - 11/04/19 01:17 PM

It's the best part of Texas IMO

Went to school out there and yes you have dust storms and yes once a year you can smell the feedlots, but I'd leave Allen, TX in a heartbeat to move back if the wife would leave her Mother. The people out there are some of the best you will ever meet by far. Tons of mom and pop restaurants that are out of this world, but if chains are your thing they have plenty of those too. Concerts, plenty of them and they are more enjoyable than those here in DFW as they aren't overly crowded. Healthcare is fantastic as well. I never understand the hate the town gets. I always here from folks who are shocked that I enjoy Lubbock as they find it "boring", but honestly none of them do anything in DFW for entertainment that they couldn't do in Lubbock outside of Professional sports, and honestly I would rather watch the college games (except football these days). We go back about twice a year to spend a few days and I wish we went more.
