Tactical response vehicle....they use if for whenever it's needed to protect themselves. Think SWAT and disaster relief situations.

Surplus military equipment was a big thing a few years back, a lot of people were scared that the local LEO's were being militarized. Now they use these things in hostage situations, active shooter sits and I believe I saw one case where it was used in a family dispute situation.

I've also seen them used that way.

They are decommissioned by the military due to not being usable for use in military operations, but are still functional for active shooter, barricaded suspect situations, so they are sold at discount for domestic use by police departments. Would you rather they just sit idle and rot away?

They could have scrapped them for pennies per pound. At the time they were the best the military had, and they had served their use until converted to surplus.

If you consider a massively discounted purchase of a vehicle that doesn't meet current military standards, but is fully functional to be used to keep police officers from being exposed to gunfire that can kill them, as a waste of money...that's your prerogative.

A Fire Engine can cost $500,000 to $750,000
A Fire Truck can cost $1,250,000
Most of us don't get them "surplus".

I don't see anyone bitching about that.

Bet you Midland wouldn’t mind having one. I agree with LEO having everything they need just in case some jacka$$ decides he’s going to be in control of other people’s lives.

What the public doesn’t know, won’t hurt them. Take a poll and I guarantee the public’s perception of cost would be 1/4 to half what it reality is. They just don’t know. But they still have gargantuan expectations.

For the record, I sure wasn’t implying we don’t need them...I have family in law enforcement and if it saves just one life, it’s worth every penny. I was just stating it was a neat machine with a huge price tag. Probably not too many companies out there making them, so the prices get ridiculous and they can pretty much charge what they want. Same thing with fire trucks and fighter jets.

Midland Sheriffs office has a tank. At least they did when Gary Painter was sheriff.

I’ll admit I have 0 clue what Midland has. Just saying if they could have used something like this and saved lives, worth every penny. I know the situation(s) recently probably went down before they could be deployed but still.

Midland was the last shooting I remembered.

Dallas PD Headquarters last year, he was shooting from an armored truck.

Why does the Police Department need a .50 BMG? That's why.

Re: What is this used for? - 10/13/19 12:32 AM

I've got one.

I bet in White Settlement your Police and Fire have a sub 5 minute response time. Want to spend way less in taxes? You can join me in Fannin county, not inside Bonham. You'll see at best a 30 minute response time from Fannin county Sheriff's Department, and who knows how long your FD takes to get there with 2 people instead of 20. Qualified, and fast public safety departments cost a bunch of money.

There is the grip YOU DO NOT have.
