F250 lugnuts

F250 lugnuts - 09/10/19 02:43 AM

Took my truck to Ford dealer today for oil chang, fuel filter, and tire rotation.

Service rep comes and finds me and says that 9 of my lugnuts are "swollen." WTF? I didn't realize this was an issue. I guess Ford uses a 2 part lugnut and the chrome cap gets hot and deforms. Not a safety issue, just an issue of not being able to get them on/off.

Truck is a 17 model. 68k miles. They told me new lugnuts would be $19.50 each. Nope. Then came back at $12.50 each. Put em back on. I'll find them cheaper and change them my dang self.

Anyone else had this problem? I started googling and found where someone filed a class action suit against them, but was dismissed by a judge. This is not a warranty item or a recall item.

I’ve never heard of either.

2017 Fx4 Superduty. Bought new, 51,000 miles on it now. Ford house rotates my tires about every other oil change. Never heard of it. They totally rebuilt the front end after I almost rolled it with the dreaded Death Wobble at 26,000 miles.

Probably a chrome cap over a steel lug nut like they’ve done for years. Buy a set of locking lugs and call it a day

Very common issue with Ford. I believe at one point there was either a recall or service bulletin about them. Go to a tire shop probably $2-3 a pop and never look back.

Common problem, surprised ford has not addressed it.

GM had the same problem in the late 70’s to early 80’s in fact it was such a problem for them I have a socket just to remove the older GM lugnuts.

Of course... I’d never heard the term “swollen lug nut” until a few years ago

Discount Tire told me about the lug nut issue with my '13, I just bought their lug nuts and moved on down the road.

Apparently is a very common problem and now at class-action status

Moving my daughter in for her junior year at Baylor, I ran across some metal in the hwy and blew two tires. As I was pulling over, I noticed several other cars with the same issue. Car behind mine was an infiniti crossover, one flat in the rear driver side. I go back to help them, as it was two ladies, mom and daughter going to Austin.

I start loosening lugs and get to the last one which was a locking lug that needed a special bit to get off. I asked if they had it, they were clueless. I showed them, they didn't believe me, so I let them have the lug wrench and realize the round lug isn't going to turn in the hex lug wrench. I say the tool should be in the glove box or middle console. They look, don't find. They are clueless. Owners manual doesn't say anything about it. I wasn't about to search through their car. I left them telling them they needed that lug tool. I watched three separate cars including one tow truck pull up and try to help. All left unsuccessful. When my flatbed arrived, I left and they were still there.

Moral of the story, if you buy locking lugs, you better keep the tool/key in the car.

I got the locking lug nuts with a BMW some years back. They rusted up and had to be cut off. Would have cost me, but they were the ones recommended and sold by that dealership. Not doing that again.

Re: F250 lugnuts - 09/10/19 10:53 PM

They tried to pull that BS on me a couple years ago on my 2015. They said it was probably caused by "someone" over tightening the lugs. I told the they were the only ones to ever touch that truck since I bought it new there and bought their maintenance and service contracts! Took a bad referral to Ford for them to put new lugs on at their expense!.

Re: F250 lugnuts - 09/11/19 12:29 AM

no need to cut them off and risk damage to a wheel, there are sockets made just for removing those locks if you loose the key

No, they have loose screws.

Happened to me, I think it was the early '80s on my 1977 Chevy Nova. Didn't think too much about it the first time even though I had to rent a tow dolly to get the car to a tire shop.
After the second time I replaced all the lug nuts with simple steel ones.
