Small World Occurrences.. - 09/09/19 06:50 PM

When is the last time it happened to you? Well it just happened to me nuts

At work just got through eating lunch had my dopp kit in hand to brush my teeth ( all 3 of them) and the receptionist calls and say hey David do you want to help this lady looking at the muscle cars, I said sure.
Introduced myself she said her first name and we walked off talking about cars, after a few minutes she stopped looking me dead in the eyes and said what is your name? I said David then she said her name Robby _ _ _ _ . Well the hugs broke out and the what the hell have you been doing...

It was a gal that I knew from Oak Cliff since I was about 15 years old, she went to Carter I went to Kimball but we all had the same big group of friends and hung out at the same places Kiest Park, Red Bird Park, Travis Street Electric co.night club etc.. Her older brothers and my older brothers were friends.
I have not seen or spoken to this gal in about 40 years, what are the odds??

Encounters like that are neat. Will you keep in touch with her?

I have one I'll share. Three years ago I was at an out-of-the-way beach bar in Jamaica. Standing at the bar ordering drinks I heard, to me, a distinctive voice. I knew immediately who it was. Turned around, looked right at the person - just as the person looked at me. Though we only hung out occasionally, we met in high school and haven't seen each other since college. Anyway, on that Jamaican trip we hung out a good bit and have kept in touch since, meeting up annually in Jamaica. We'll be there again soon.

Friday mornings, I have breakfast with some other retired guys from church. One of the guys, a few years my senior only comes about once a month, but I have known him and his wife several years.

About two months ago, the topic of summer jobs came up. When it was his time for confession, he mentioned his summer job during college was mowing, as with a tractor mowing. He went on to say, he often met his boss and crew members at and old swimming hole called Twin Falls for lunch.

I mentioned that was place I hadnt thought of in a long time. Well come to find out, he had lived on Elston, right by Twin Falls. We both knew the same families., went to same barber, etc. We both went to Wheatland Elementary, this really small old school at Hampton and Wheatland Rd. His family moved to north , so went to he went to SOC. I went to Carter.

I went to school with a guy while we stationed in Spain, 7th and 8th grade, about 4 years later he got stationed at Dyess AFB. I had moved back to Abilene and we ran into each other. 2 years later, I boarded a C130 headed for Ben Hoa, and I hear my name being called I go see what they want, again, he is there and he is the Crew Chief on the C130 we are on.

I use to be a loan officer and one day at work things were a bit slow and reading an article on cnn about a musician a few minutes later that same musician called me wanting to do a loan.

Second small world moment actually happened not far from It's a Small World ride at Disney World. There with my family and I get a tap on the shoulder. When I turn around it was my Prom Date from 20 years prior.

Re: Small World Occurrences.. - 09/09/19 07:51 PM

This August a new home was built next door to the cabin that we have in Pagosa Springs, Co for the last 10 years. We spend the summer there. I see a lady out in the yard watering flowers so I go over to introduce myself. As I stick out my hand and start to say my name, she says, "I know who you are." it turns out that we were classmates at Eastern Hills High School in Ft. Worth. We are having our 50th class reunion in October. So I had not seen this women for over 50 years and then she becomes my neighbor in a little town in southwestern Colorado.

I met up with a childhood friend/high school buddy (whom I still very much keep in touch with) yesterday for the cowboy game. He lives in DFW but is in Austin for work this week. The sales guy he's meeting with also met us and he and I got to talking and learned that we both cook competitive BBQ and have competed against each other and a couple years ago he gave me a tour of his smoker and our turned our pretty similar.

We will meet up again at the beginning of October at the Keller Lions Club BBQ Cook Off. My buddy has come to that cookoff a number of times so he will come out there as well.

My dad used to say, "Watch who you tell lies to, it's a small world!"

Went to college with a guy, we took wildlife classes together, occasionally hung out. Went our seperate ways, never kept up with each other. It took me four years after graduating, but I finally got a ranch manager job in east TX. I had to make a run to the south TX ranch, and they were interviewing for the assistant manager job there. The ranch manager and this guy start walking towards me and I was thinking this guy looked familiar. Sure enough it was that guy I went to school with ten years ago, now we're working for the same guy but at different ranches.

Re: Small World Occurrences.. - 09/09/19 10:22 PM

Many years ago when I was a bouncer at Cowboys on Gaston, I dated a regular customer that was in our group of friends. Made it about 9 months. Too many women there, to stay focused. 25 years later I finished an all day team roping and wanted a burger and a few jack Daniels and found a little hole in the wall bar. Sitting at bar and I hear my name called, turned around and she was looking at me like she wanted to eat me. Must have be the spurs.
That little guy on my shoulder that was saying “run” in my ear got knocked out by the other guy on my other shoulder saying “what the hell! Saddle up”.
2 years later I was running maverick again. Didn’t work 20 years ago either, but it was a hell of a ride.

World wasn’t quite big enough.

I guess it does, because I had a hanging basket of flowers in my hand to give to her. We always give our hanging baskets away when we leave to come back to Texas.

Wanted to wait until the wife could confirm it and she did last night ,

The inlaws had moved into our house from Wichita Falls because the FIL was gravely ill, when he finally passed away we let the MIL stay for awhile bang
When she finally moved out she found an apartment off of Keller Springs where my wife (her daughter) use to live back in 1991.

Turns out she rented the exact same apartment my wife use to lived in nuts

Some years ago I was hanging out one weekend during a business trip on the Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro. There was another American dude sitting near me drinking beer as well and on business. We were enjoying the scenery and flirting with the girls. We chatted and drank the afternoon away, just hanging out.

Three months later I run into the same guy in passing 2 hours outside of Bangkok, Thailand.

Met a guy once whose mother was a nurse in the OB ward at the same time I was born...in Stephenville, Newfoundland in 1959! Small Air Force base so its a good possibility she helped in my delivery.

We bought a new ranch last year and 6 months later my son gets a call at his credit union 200 miles away from one of the owners wanting a loan for a new truck.

I was stepping off of a plane in Cozmel and looked down and saw one of our local guys from home standing there. He had a woman with him that was not his wife. I know the guy and walked by him and said hi and shook hands. He had a grin on his face you couldn't wash off in 100 years.

I was in London in 95 riding the Tube. I was there on an extended screw off vacation.

I saw a buddy of mine, stood up, and said, 'Howdy, Andy!'. I had not seen him in 10 years and we worked together in NY. I was not expecting to run into anyone and he was not expecting to run into this big Texan randomly on the subway.

Good times.

I was stepping off a hotel elevator in NYC several years ago and my best friend was waiting to get on at the lobby. I thought it was some kind of gag, but we happened to both be there for business meetings at same time.

I also see people from my past in airports on occasion. Some are better reunions than others.
