True Grit - 07/20/19 12:52 AM

Maddie Ross is a insufferable character.

If I was that horse trader I would have shot the horse in front of her.

She makes the movie almost impossible to watch

Not sure the movie is as good as it is if she’s not insufferable....but Strother Martin was greatness as Stonehill.

The original, of course....never cruised through the re-make.

Baby sister, I was born game and I intend to go out that way.

Damn you, Bo. First time you ever give me reason to... cuss you.

Mattie Ross: Do you know a Marshal Rooster Cogburn?
Col. G. Stonehill: Most people around here have heard of Rooster Cogburn and some people live to regret it. I would not be surprised to learn that he's a relative of yours.

Col. G. Stonehill: I will pay a total of two hundred dollars to your father's estate when I have in my hand a letter absolving me of all liability from the beginning of the world to date!

LaBoeuf: You're lucky to be where water's so handy. I've seen the time I've drank out of a filthy hoofprint - and was glad to get it.
Rooster Cogburn: If ever I meet one of you Texas waddies who ain't drunk water from a hoofprint, I think I'll... I'll shake their hand or buy 'em a Daniel Webster cigar.

Hannie Caulder was my favorite movie he was in.

But that's only because he was in it. Still would have been great even if they casted Mickey Mouse

I'm a big Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon fan so I kinda prefer the remake myself. BTW the reason Maddie told Frank James "keep your seat trash" at the end of the remake was because James was a traitor/double spy during the Civil War.

Well Steinfeld did it even better the second time around.

I think the remake is leaps and bounds better than the original. John Wayne is John Wayne, and he played a few good parts in his day but I think Jeff Bridges plays a much better Rooster Cogburn. No comparison between Glenn Campbell and Matt Damon.

These things are always a matter of opinion and taste, but I've always been a huge John Wayne fan so my pick is the original. I will agree on the Matt Damon/Glenn Campbell thing. As much as I always loved Glenn Campbell's music, he was just awful in True Grit. They should have stuck with him singing the theme song and been done with it.
I did see the new one when it came out and overall it was a good movie. My big gripe with Jeff Bridges is that I couldn't understand a good bit of what he was saying. For my taste, I'll stick with the original.

Two different bands with the same name.

David lee’s Van Halen was surface level glam rock.

Hagar’s band was more intellectual, intelligent and refined.

As an aside, did you know that David lee Roth was an EMT for many years after Van Halen? Imagine getting into a car wreck and diamond dave shows up to stabilize you and whisk you off to the ER.

I do have respect for him for that

Dave was great but I was already a big fan of Sammy before he joined the band.He was already a pretty big star in his own right. So it was like a dream come true for me when I heard he was joining VH.

The newer True Grit was not intended as a remake. The Coen Brothers wanted to make a new movie that more closely followed the book by Charles Portis.

The older one is a John Wayne western which happens to use the general storyline from the book.

Glen Campbell played the "texican" right? What was so bad about him?

To me his character was suppose to be an outsider to the territory he was in and fit fine. If its because of his acting lord we better watch out or all the older movies are junk.

Put me down as favoring the old version. I don't much like Jeff Bridges in the remake, seems very fake and cant understand him.

If you can watch that movie and not cringe at Glen Campbell’s feeble attempts at acting then you are a better man than me. His performance comes off exactly like a 12 year old in their first ever school play.

He was one of the best musicians in the business. He was not an actor.

Re: True Grit - 07/23/19 04:28 PM

To me his character fits the part of what he plays in the movie. Sure they girls is annoying as all get out too, but she is suppose to be. To me campbell is suppose to play an idiot from texas which he seems to pull of fine.

Re: True Grit - 07/23/19 06:50 PM

Let’s be honest with ourselves for a bit. We all like John Wayne for who he was. His acting and movies in general were not that great.

James Stewart is another good example. Good guy but his characters were almost cartoonish
Posted By: Nogalus Prairie

Re: True Grit - 07/23/19 07:01 PM

John Wayne was such a strong presence/personality that he really didn’t have to act - especially as long as it was a western. Which is the reason 90% of his movies were westerns. That said, he had become a pretty dang good actor by the 70s. He did a great job in The Shootist (IMO his best performance).

Jimmy Stewart was a good actor. Yes some of his roles were over-the-top, but he was a fine actor. “Rear Window”, “Mr. Smith Goes To Washington”, and several others are excellent performances. IMHO.

It was widely acknowledged by all involved with the film that he was hired solely to cash in on his musical popularity at the time and that his acting was terrible. The director called it “wooden, at best”. Glen himself said this about his performance: “I had never acted before, and after “True Grit” I think my record’s still clean.” smile
