LOL ive used a YOYO, but that mower was before my time. Had one at my grandmas farm house we used to stay at. Dad said he used it when he was a boy, it was all locked up when I tried it.

I mowed with one like that many times. I learned pretty quick that you never let the grass get too high or that thing would wear you out.

We had a reel mower, but dad bought a gas powered mower for us boys. My little brother always mowed, he was dad’s favorite. Ok with me.

My grandparents had one of those mowers, with about an acre of St Augustine grass. Walked many a mile behind that mower.

Mom's worse, she would have made him act like he enjoy's it too, maybe write a paragraph on why it's the right thing to do.

My cousins and I took turns on one of those at my grandparent's house when we were kids. When it was over we took turns turning the crank on a homemade ice cream freezer.

I would like to have a working one right now. I have a very small area to mow in front of the shop. So small I use my trimmer to mow. I'd rather push a reel mower that doesn't have an engine. And that's after having the blessing of a new Bucee's near the house that sells ethanol free gas.

I use a manual reel like that. This season will be the last though. Going to upgrade to a greens mower. \o/

They can be found pretty reasonable, both new and real vinatge ones. The lady down the street uses a Scott's brand, she said she paid about $60 for it new.

I would love to have a working antique. But, I know those are harder to come by and probably cost much more.

I never used one, but there were a whole host of other issues my dad gave me the same option.

I had one very similar to that. It worked like magic on my St Augustine lawn, it hated my Bermuda lawn. The sound of the blades cutting and watching it works was very relaxing. I also had a edger that was very similar, no motor, the faster you pushed the faster the blade turned.

Works well with sharp blades and no long stemmy weeds. Just rolls over them. I used to have a tiff yard and the motorized reel type mower really makes a nice
short cut.

We didn't have illegal immigrants whom would mow, weed eat and blow the grass clipping for $25 per yard like we have now days.

Re: You have two choices, son... - 07/21/19 04:39 PM
We had one of those things when I was in the 4th grade. The house we lived in was situated on level ground, which was about 4 feet higher than the sidewalk out front. There was something like a 40 to 45 degree slope at the edge of the lawn that ended with a wall about 8-10 inches high next to the sidewalk. You cannot push one of those monstrosities down a slope that sharp the handle ends up over your head. So it's up slope each and every time.
This thing also had a bolt with a huge head on it that locked the handle to the shaft. Invariable there would be twigs on that slope and that damned thing would come to a very abrupt stop and that bolt head would center punch my scrawny chest. I'd have to get the stupid thing off the slope, pick the twig out, lift it above the retaining wall and gather momentum all over again. Oh, and Lord help me if I did not very carefully get that mower of the wall instead of letting gravity do the work.
I still hate even the sight of them.
