Venison Heart and Kidney - 01/14/21 03:50 AM

I shot a couple of does over the weekend.
So put the hearts and kidneys to good use.

Interesting...I love the heart. Eat them all the time. Occasionally eat the liver as well. Never crossed my mind to eat the kidneys. What do they taste like?

Looks great man. I love heart & liver, but have never had a good kidney, yet.

In S Texas (especially deep S texas) Machitos are a hit with a lot of folks.

I never cared for the ones I have eaten and cooked. I prefer my organ meat done separately the way that I like them.

Google "machitos" for those who may be curious, typically come from goats.

The kidney is kind of a cross between heart and liver.
I prefer the heart.
My wife was eating the kidney poppers, and she said she liked them better than the heart.
But heart is my favorite.

I thought the only way to cook kidneys was to boil the Pi#s out of them. roflmao

Lol
Thatā€™s what I told my family last night.
You know how to cook kidneys donā€™t you?
You boil the piss out of them.

Eating grilled deer heart is part of the initiation for anyone in our family when they get their first deer. After that, the heart does not get thrown away by the family shooter and it's usually grilled the same day.

Like I said, "Thanks, but sorry". The wife would have quit hunting 40 years ago if I tried that!!

You need to try this out one evening, I did.

Me - "Hey honey, you smell that?"

Her - "No, smell what?"

Me - "Exactly, now get in the kitchen".

boxing grin

She could eat whatever she wants, that looks good!

If I tried that, I wouldn't be seeing her for a week. By then, the swelling would be going down!! At least I could stay out in the RV. roflmao

Yep. Eating the heart for dinner after a morning hunt or the next day for lunch after an afternoon hunt is part of my routine (and one of my favorite meals). My wife enjoys liver so she gets all of the liver for herself.

Re: Venison Heart and Kidney - 01/15/21 03:00 PM

Nope!!!

When I was little my dad and his friends thought it would be funny to make me eat the fresh heart out of the first deer killed that season for ā€œinitiationā€ into deer camp since it was my first year. Think I got 1-2 bites in before I threw up which they got a picture of, think I was 7-8 at the time.

I actually didnā€™t eat red meat again until I was probably 16-17 years old. Still not a big fan of deer.

Can't never could. Cleaned up hearts make great tacos. Throw it in an instapot with some garlic and cook till its nice and tender. Delicious!

Just not something that I ever cared for. Guts is guts to me, but my hunting partner loves heart, so I save them for her. That elk heart from yesterday was huge, and is safely hiding in the freezer for her!!

I ate the heart from the bull elk I killed last year. It made pretty good fajitas...ā€¦.but I just was a little squimish about eating it. I dunno. I guess organ meat just isn't my favorite.
