I eat it every day during the summer. Cut off the top and cook em onhigh in a cast iron skillet with a little olive or avocado oil for a few mins turning them as they cook so they don't burn. Turns out with a great pop of a texture, not gooey.

Fried but we like it baked. Cut it up and cover salt pepper a little olive oil and fresh grated Parmesan cheese. Cook at 425 for 10-15 mins.

I steam them in a ziploc steambag. Would rather have fried but that's a mess.

Fried with cornmeal and country style sliced potatoes was our favorite, then this recipe came along and spoiled us. Add some Hatch gree chilis or fine chopped jalapenos for an extra treat.

Quote
OKRA PATTIES
1 lb fresh okra or 1 (18 ounce) bag frozen cut okra...
1/2 cup onion (chopped)
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 large egg
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 pinch garlic powder (optional)
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
oil (for frying)
Combine cut okra, onion, salt, pepper, water and egg.
Mix well. Combine flour, baking powder, cornmeal and garlic powder.
Add to okra mixture, stirring well.
Drop about 1/4 cup portions into about 1/2" hot oil.
Fry over medium heat until well browned on both sides.
Drain on paper towels.

If you haven't tried it you'll be surprised how good, just like sweet corn is raw.

yep, pretty much anyway I can think of doing okra, I like. Prefer fried or a simple okra/tomato gumbo ... or coat in olive oil, add seasoning, and put over a hot grill for a few minutes.

Grilled.
It's fast ,simple, and delicious.
I guess it was on the fishing forum a couple of years ago. Someone posted that they simply apply a thin coat of veggie or olive oil on whole okra, salt/pepper, and grill only long enough to get grill marks on each side. Said his family ate 'em up before the meal was ever served every time. I tried it - 100% love it this way.

Re: Okra - 09/10/19 05:16 PM

I don't think ive had okra I didn't like, gumbo, fried, baked, raw, pickled, but my favorite is how my mom used to make it. She would melt some butter in a cast iron skillet slice in the okra and some onion and cook down a little then when okra was tender mix in some seasoned cornmeal. It would cook into a hash I guess, I loved it.

Lots of ways are great. Grilled is a less common but bloody delicious way to cook it.live oil, salt pepper. A sweet/spicy sauce works well, too.

Re: Okra - 09/14/19 04:25 PM

Split in half lengthwise, a little Olive oil, salt and pepper. Roast in the oven at 425 for 20-23 minutes until they just almost start to burn on the edges.

Tricky Fish in Fort Worth splits them lengthwise and flash fries them unbreaded, that's where I got the idea but wanted to make it a little more healthy.

My dad who is 65 loves fried okra and when I made a full sheet pan my way he almost ate the whole pan. Said it's his new favorite way to eat okra. Experiment with seasonings. I've tried Cajun seasoning, lemon pepper, dry ranch seasoning etc. It's all good.

Pickled very hot!

Re: Okra - 09/18/19 03:40 AM

I like it fried, steamed, in gumbo and just about any other way.

I tried the grilled okra tonight and it was really good the only bad thing was I had two pieces that fell through the grill. After eating my share I almost went out and rescue those two pieces. I’m going to have to try the okra cakes that someone mentioned and then just cook it in the cast iron pan.

I have some that I need to cut up and freeze to make gumbo this fall. I may even go to the market this weekend to buy some more for this winter.
