They were like sloppy Joe's but with mustard, onions and pickle relish. I would love the recipe.

Never ate cafeteria food, always brown bagged it and it was usually one of two things.
Bologna with mayo and a slice of American cheese and chips or PBJ and chips up

my mom drove a school bus for almost 30 years beginning in the 1950s and the bus barn was next to the old high school cafeteria ... I literally was raised eating school cafeteria food up thru about 5th grade. and my mom would get recipes from the lunch room ladies for use at home on those my brother and I liked. The below is about as close as I remember to the sloppy joe recipe shooting from making it hundreds of times years ago.

1 lb hamburger
1 medium chopped white onion
1/2 cup ketchup with water mixed in to make 3/4 cup
1/2 teaspoon dry fine mustard
1 tablespoon brown sugar
heavy splash Worcestershire sauce
1 can tomato soup

brown hamburger with onions and drain. add all the other ingredients and bring to a low boil, then drop to a simmer, serve over hamburger buns.

It was something about the mustard and pickle relish. The patties were not 100% hamburger...at least they di dnot look like it. I loved those things.

My favorite cafeteria food was the yeast rolls

We had an awesome cafeteria crew back in my days. They would each take turns cooking some pretty good meals for us. From gumbo to burgers...Myself and few other athletes would always go back for seconds to fuel us up more for practices and workouts. I remember going back for thirds once. Although you got charged more, but it was good.

Fresh warm yeast rolls for 3 cents each and vanilla ice cream 3x3x1" thick bar in the middle of the roll was my lunch most days. I worked 5-9 5 days a week and 11-9 on Saturday and Sunday for $1.25 an hour for a 40 hour week in a Broasted Chicken store the last 2 years of high school...the owner fed me anything I wanted he had "left over" to keep his food fresh every 15 minutes, I ate a lot of chicken & potatos in those days too... best "fried" chicken I ever ate, along with the quartered potoato wedges deep fried in the same grease...it's wonder I was only 5'7+" & 137 lbs when I graduated.

Went to work on the freight docks full time after I got married at 23 to make enough to go back to college part time and kept that schedule up for for 3 1/2 years...weighed about 155/160, wore a size 40/42 suit coat and had a 36" waist when I started...and weighed 205 with a 30/32" waist and wore a size 48 or 50 suit coat 3 years later, ... and hit 285+ couple times in the years since then. Weighed 231 at last month's 6 month checkup...and still wear a size 52+ suit coat, but with a 36/38" waist ... when I can find it.

Being a military dependent I went through a lot of schools before I graduated. Trust me, some schools had great cooks, some should have been fired. At one school, in Spain the staff was locals, with a cook that was American. Some days our lunch was a surprise, depending on whether the cook and the staff were on the same recipe. But they made a killer sloppy joe, none of the catsup flavor that most had, they used a local sauces instead of catsup and Worcestershire sauce. They also served it over small loaves of French bread instead of hamburger buns. My mother tried to match the recipe to American sauces, and never could.
