I keep it simple and basic, either PF Changs or Pei Wei for this guy...

Cathay House in Waco. Cantonese style so not as oily as the Mandarin places, and everything is really fresh. Quet place, great food, and the whole place smells mouth-wateringly delicious.

We went there a lot when I was a kid. My dad was a character and the whole staff knew him on sight. I hadn't been there in about 25 years when I got out of the Corps, and when I found out it was just a block behind my first civilian job office building I stepped in for lunch. There was an elederly Chinese woman behind the counter. She looked at me and said, "You Joe's boy!". I was never allowed to pay for a meal there after that.

The only thing that had changed was the waiters actually wrote orders down. When I was a kid they didn't. You could go in there with a party of 10 and they wouldn't take a single written order and never messed one up to my knowledge. In all fairness, though, I remember that if you were with a large party they'd assign several waiters to your table and each would handle a portion of the orders. It was still really impressive.

I liked the Great Wall in Bryan when I was working there. For Asian I like Thai food. One in Lubbock made Texas Monthly with an added comment they could clean their vent more often. My favorite is another one with similar decor called ChoChai. You hot food guys can get all you want at a good Thai place. ChoChai serves mild, medium or spicey and tells you up front if the spicey is to hot they won't replace it. Medium makes my forehead sweat enough.

We used to love the original location. Lately they have been very inconsistent. Used to be the best.

Re: Favorite or Best Asian/Chinese Place - 05/22/21 12:33 AM

I’m 40 miles from PF Chang’s in Waco. The Pei Wei there closed (food got less and less good, and I guess that killed it). That leaves Mama Fu’s and Cathay House, which are Ok. I miss the neighborhood Chinese places in Houston. There were some good ones.

PF Chang’s has good food, but the prices are way too high for the food quality, and the place just seems a bit snooty. Maybe high prices cause them to feel snooty. Surely there’s a small neighborhood joint in the Waco area that I just haven’t found.

Might try Mama Fu’s again tomorrow.

Original location was great, ate there a couple times a week since I had a lady friend that was a waitress there. Good times.

Wow! That looks great. We'll be in Dallas the first week of June for my wife's infusion and surgery. I may run over there one evening.

First Chinese BBQ in Arlington is GOOD.

Right down the road from my office. The strip center it is in looks kinda seedy on the outside, but you walk into the restaurant and it is spotless. The picture BigBob took is right inside the door at the entrance to the restaurant.

Lots of menu items, big portions, small prices. If you go there it is cash only so bring cash lol.

Went to Mama Fu’s in Waco. Wife was starving. The place was closed permanently. Darn.

Chinese restaurant is apparently a victim of the China Virus. I had my mouth all set for Chinese food...

This hole in the wall in Plano has the best soup:

I am sure the other food is excellent. They have been scared of the Chinese flu in the past, as it was delivery or pick up only, so call before planning on dining in.

Four Sisters Taste of Vietnam on South Main, Fort Worth. And, Tu Hai on East Belknap in Haltom City. Been a while since I have been over that side so check if open first. My favorites when I lived in FW.

In Richardson, Saigon Block on Arapahoe. Ate there twice and very good Pho.

There is a cluster of really good Oriental restaurants in north Plano - just west of 75 on Legacy. I usually end up in the little Pho place and then walk over to the supermarket. There is a guy in there that makes handmade dessert crepes that are delicious.

I had never heard of this place until recently. Mike Chen of Strictly Dumpling (a YouTube Food Reviewer with over 2 million subscribers) just moved to Allen and filmed a video here. I gave it a try a week later and it's some of the best Chinese food I've ever had. The soup dumplings are awesome.

I stopped doing Chinese food buffets once I had real home cooking Chinese, but there is a buffet in McKinney off 75 that has a full parking lot every single day even during Rona. I'm intrigued.

Hey bigbob, do you ever do skillman wok down the strip center from Kroger on camp Bowie? That's our carry out place, no real dining area inside. Very good for carry out. We always start off with crab Rangoons and fried dumplings, most of the regular dishes are good too.

Been a few times and enjoy it. I'd certainly go back. You might also try taste of Asia next to albertsons on Clifford. Good variety.

Yeah, we do taste of Asia once and awhile. If you like Thai, Rice and Noodle is decent, there on camp Bowie down from braums. Lims donuts make good egg rolls surprisingly. You have to get there pretty early though.
