Texas Monthly, aka "Austin Monthly", Magazine.

I've always thought that this rag believes that civilization ends when you cross the Travis County line. And sadly for them, blue Austin is the most "un-Texan" city in this red state. The writers for TM couldn't find Lumberton or Lueders if you gave them a map, a GPS, and a local guide. I guess it's the old blue state mentality prevalent in the written media.

Am I surprised that 8 of the top 50 burgers are served up in Austin? And probably another 8 or so within 50 miles of same? Nope, not really......

The sign before the name change looked like this.

Koffee
Kup
Kafe

they make a mean coconut pie too.

signs still there

Half of those places on there will cost you 10 bucks for a burger.

No one charges that much for a good burger.

You gotta hit the greasy spoons roadside to get burger baskets not some urban diner.....Austin, Dallas and Houston get ranked probably because the Texas Monthly judges needed 5 star hotels to sleep in. Nice to see the list though

That place is at the end of the road, in the middle of nowhere, in the land that time forgot. Bats flying around everywhere, burgers and live music, about 8 miles from Luchenbach, as the bat flies. Juicy, thick, ground fresh and never frozen beef, pure Texas.

Went to the Twisted root burger company #15 and it was fine, also did Fred's in Ft worth, but wasn't nearly as impressive as the burgers at Mary's Cafe. But my favorite greasy burger is still Nicky D's on 1187 in Crowley.

Posted By: Stoney

Re: Top 50 Best Burgers in Texas ! - 09/07/10 06:45 PM

Frosty Drive In in Denton is pretty dang good. But I doubt you'd catch one of the Austin hippy reporter types over on Ft. Worth drive.

2. Cole's BBQ(Fairfield TX)
3. Dairyland(jacksboro tx)
4. Twisted root(Dallas)
5. Kellers(Dallas)

Re: Top 50 Best Burgers in Texas ! - 09/09/10 01:18 PM

i have had a twisted root big [censored] burger before. I was pretty disapointed. It was alright, but i had been expecting a jaw dropping experience. people had been talking this place up and getting me excited. I am not one of those people that listens to the general praise of a establishment and then try it and bash it just to be different. if i hear a lot of praise i expect it to be pretty good and i didn't get that from twisted root. i got a decent burger. the meat had no taste and was bland. It needed seasoning. By the end of the burger i was getting bored. The other problem is the price. Geez, by the time i ordered the burger fries and drink it was close to $15. I had heard about the homeade root beer, but it tasted tart and lacked sweetness. It was as if it was watered down. When i crave a burger i just grill for my family and season to my liking. i control what goes in it from the seasoning to the leaness of the meat. i can toast the bun to my liking and make it the way i want.

Can't believe I forgot about Kellers Catus Jack's in Dallas. Good cheap burgers. There use to be another place in dallas called Texas Burgers. Usually couldn't get the burger back to my office before it would eat through the bottom of the paper sack. Good stuff. Not sure if it's still around or not. Don't go to Dallas anymore if I can help it.

Ok when they were at #15 they should have got up,pushed their overpriced driedout cold pisspoorly served burger away .Then walked across the street to Adair's Saloon and had a REAL BURGER like the one pictured above.
What is up with all these "gourmet burger" places? Check this one out. We tried it a few weeks ago. Three grown men ate lucnch for $21.39. Thats not bad for a fresh burger with fresh cut fries and drinks.

Old_Town, I will have to totally disagree with you. You've got it all wrong. It should read Storm's in Burnet, Hamilton, then Lampasas. But I will eat one in whichever of the three towns I am in. Grew up on them and would serve them for Christmas if the family would let me. Storm's Special, the only way to go.

All my life, we traveled a lot, I went to 17 different Schools, Dad was a Road Construction Superintendent, and we went all over..
Best Hamburgers were always any DQ or something close to a DQ, a DK, DP, whatever... Later, a Whataburger, or whatever was the most convenient, easy on, easy off.. clean bathroom.
BBQ, now that's where you went looking for the abandoned Service Stations, with smoke pourin out the whole building, with an old Black man with gray hair cooking... always the most excellent.
Same for Mexican Food. always the little cafe or some old abandoned store front, fat mamacitas in the kitchen, nieces and granddaughters serving..keywords to look for.. "Menudo-Todos Los Dias".. Same for Barbacoa de cabeza ... "Tacos al Carbon"..
The best indicator was during breakfast or lunch time.. big bunches of pickups and service trucks out front with ladders, tools, acetylene and oxygen tanks on them... that was the where they served the good food, or the place that had sexy waitresses who would flirt with us working class stiffs..

You've got it figgured out Dirty Don. There was no way my ole' daddy would pass up a barbeque place such as the one you described. He scoured the sides of the highway looking for just such places.
And as for Mexican Food, a friend stated the other day, "If the waitress comes to the table and asked what you want to drink in English... you are in the wrong place!"

I've been meaning to try that place on 1187. Now I know I should. Been to Mary's a hundred times too, but never for the burgers.

I somewhat know the guys at Twisted Root, was one of their first customers. I like the burgers there. I think they do the ole breadcrumbs in the meat trick.

Kind of surprised Angry Dog is on the list.

Wonder how they rate em. Like a 1-10 list and then compile the results or something I guess.
