Cancer questions - 06/03/19 06:47 PM

Hey guys I am looking for some information and see if anyone has nay experience with the problem I have. I have a 2 year old black lab. I noticed she had a growth on her rear left leg in December which was about 2mm in height and length. Very uniform and not painful to palpate. Bailey, the lab, never alerted me to any issues with her leg. We took her in for her annual and I asked the vet about it (CityVet) and she seemed somewhat concerned. She drew a sample and checked it in house and found a very small number of Mast cells which prompted her to send it to a pathologist as it was inconclusive if it for sure was cancer and not just an inflammatory response. Does anyone have any experience with Mast cell cancer? My research online shows that it can be many stages. Results should be back on Wednesday. Thanks for y'all's input.

My experience was unpleasant.
We had a vizsla that had a mass on her tail, stage 4 if i'm not mistaken, when she was 7, almost 8.
The vet removed the mass, then removed her tail and we spent a small fortune on chemo.
We lost her within 4 months of diagnosis.

Hers was progressed when we found it, but mast cell is never a good thing.
The good news for you is that she's young and healthly otherwise.
Treat it aggressively.

Best of luck to you and your family.

Hate to hear that. Similar to Mud Shark, we lost a 6 yr old vizsla last year to mast cell cancer. It was very aggressive and was over within months as well. Really sucked. Hopefully since yours is only 2 she can fight and beat it.

If confirmed, they are graded which can tell you how aggressive it is. I'll be honest, I don't remember a whole lot about them.

If you're in Plano, ask for a referral to Veterinary Specialists of North Texas. http://www.vsnt.com/. They are the experts and can give you the best info in the Metroplex. I've referred patients there in the past and have been very happy with them.

I one that had two tiny bumps, about 1/4 of the size of a pencil eraser. Had them removed right away. It was sarcoma, but with clean margins. We lost her 4 years later, but it was not from cancer.

Hopefully you get good news.

If it were one of my dogs, and it's confirmed, I would not hesitate to remove the leg immediately. The sooner the better. It spreads rapidly unfortunately.

Sorry to hear this. I have nothing to add, but what does it look like? Do you have a picture to share?
