Field trials and hunt test - 01/28/19 06:24 PM
I am looking for information on field trials or hunt test. I am interested in ones held for English pointers and English cocker spaniels. I know a field trial and a hunt test are not the same thing but I would like to go watch a a couple of each and get a feel for them. Does anybody have any dates and locations for any coming up? I am aware of a cocker field trial in Waller next month that I will be attending. Anything else out there anyone may know about? Thanks

There was a NSTRA Lone Star region trial yesterday in Wills point. I believe the next one is March 2nd. They’re a lot of fun and I’ve met some great bird dog folks and lifelong friends through NSTRA. I’d recommend checking one out!

Correct me if I am wrong but they are not breed affiliated. You have events for retrieving, flushing, and pointing. These events are open to any breed that can perform the task. NTSSC is having an event soon for flushing. Think their field trial just happened.

Thanks for the info. Looks like most are a pretty good drive from the RGV but I definitely will go check some out and see if this is something I'm really interested in.

As far as AKC goes, the ones listed as "Retriever" whether field trial or hunt test I'm pretty sure they're restricted to retriever breeds only. According to the AKC rules the following are eligible for retriever trials: Chessies, Curly-coated, Flat-coated, Goldens, Labradors, Irish water spaniels and Tollers. I have also seen a couple poodles at retriever hunt tests so apparently they are eligible as well. If looking at AKC you may want to head to their website and see which breeds qualify for whatever type of event you are interested in. I'm not familiar with any organization other than AKC, so others may allow any breed to any type of test or trial.

As you may already know pointer and spaniel AKC hunt tests and trials are different. Groups like NSTRA and Bird Dog Circuit are also out there and very popular but not awarding AKC titles. Look on AKC,
www.huntsecretary.com or
www.entryexpress.net for upcoming AKC events. Search NSTRA (National Shoot to retrieve association) or Bird Dog circuit for other events. I did see a recent post that the North Texas Springer Spaniel group has a hunt test coming up. Have a look for this on facebook. Also look at the Valley View Field trial group (North Texas) on facebook for various pointer and versatile gun dog events.
