How close is too close? I know there’s a lot of line breeding in the pointers. If sire and dam of a litter have same dam, that seems pretty close. Opinions from the experts?

If possible look at the COI. Anything over 12 and I'd be concerned. I recently contemplated a line breeding on FC AFC Shaq that would produce pups with a COI of 15 but ultimately decided against it. Shaq is my dog's grandsire and the dog I wanted to breed to had Shaq as the sire.

I know that breeding cousins is not uncommon but what you're describing is breeding half siblings. I bet that's too close. IMO

How is COI factored?

Well I'm not entirely certain. There are a couple of databases that do it. You need to have st least 10-12 generations.

If the dogs are in K9data.com you can do a test breeding and in a couple weeks they will post the COI.

I think it could be higher depending on common ancestors on the sire side...

12.5 would not be enough to scare me off if i really liked the breeding.

It could be higher. I think pointer breeders look at it differently than the lab folks

Professional call it line breeding. Back yardears call it in breeding.

So Bill, what’s your take on half siblings? I found a litter that had Guard Rail blood in the common dam

My mentor told me if you bred a birddog to a birddog most likely you will get a birddog.
