Rattlesnake Vaccine - Where can I get it?

Rattlesnake Vaccine - Where can I get it? - 07/04/18 08:04 PM

So the vet I use no longer stocks the Red Rock rattlesnake vaccine.
I've called and emailed a several vets. Two places that show it on their web site, but they no longer carry it. I'm still waiting to hear back from a place in Arlington, but I don't have high hopes.

Anyone know of vet that stocks it, or that would order it? I hate the though of driving to see Dr Lindley in Childress just for a shot.

I even tried Tractor Supply, so see if we could group together and get a box of 25 doses through them, but their distribution center sent back an email saying it was not available through their supplier.

Not sure how many doses come to a box, but I'd be willing to order some if enough folks were interested for me to sell the whole box. I'm located in Ennis.

I did a (very) little research on the rattlesnake vaccine. Found this article. I'm not sure how effective it is.

Iv'e never used it.

"There is actually a pretty recent paper reviewing a few hundred cases of dogs who had been bitten by rattlesnakes and what factors were important in their outcomes. This is a very small sample (but not bad for a veterinary study). However, there were a number of rattlesnake-vaccinated dogs in the cases. The researchers found “…no measurable benefit could be identified associated with rattlesnake vaccination”. It’s possible that with a much larger sample size a benefit could be found, but with so many unanswered questions about duration of immunity and what levels are required for neutralization, I think the burden of evidence still rests on the vaccine manufacturer."

I never used it either Bill but when I got Buster my world changed. Even if it gives one extra minute to get him help I want it. Lots of dogs bit over the years and never lost one of them. Levi got bit 3 times and the last time he did not even swell up. The 2nd time was not as bad as the first. It seems he built up an immunity to their poison over the years. I know one thing, he hated snakes and would kill any he found.

All of the vets around here have it. I get mine dosed when they get rabies shot in September. My vet said she can’t tell if it makes any difference. She’s had up to 10 dogs bitten in her office in one day. For $20 I give it to mine.
Bonnie my Shorthair was bitten last year in the face by a copperhead and was fine in a week with no vet care, just Benadryl.

We had a lab rattler bitten last year in the chest. We didn’t know if she would make it. $1500 in reconstructive surgery and a month later she was fine. She didn’t have the shot. My buddy was happy to pay it and brought the vet flowers when he picked her up. Did i mention the vet in Olney is smokin hawt and really cares about her patients. I started driving 20 miles over there for her to vaccinate my mutts, and she’s the one I’d want if there was a major problem.

I get my dogs done twice a year, vet recommended it. But it’s cheap insurance since I’m only doing 2 or 3 dogs.
