Need help

Need help - 04/18/18 12:40 AM

Ok, so my rescue is not a bird dog but maybe someone can help me out. Chewing, shredding, mauling everything! Heinze 57, about 1.5 to 2 years old. Carpet/rugs, socks, blankets, towels. Now she has graduated to garden hoses, "plugged in" extension cords, don't know how she survived that one, not just bitten but chewed up in several places. Today last straw, I planted about a 3 foot fig tree, she shredded it. Thought I was going to kill her. I have never hit her or abused her. I need some help, I can't hide everything from her.

FYI, My sig pic is my cocker, that is not the one I am talking about..

Give her a couple more years. They grow out of it. Meanwhile pick stuff up.

I figured she would eventually, keeping things away from her easily is easier said than done. In the back yard, anything that is not nailed down she plays with and then devours. Like trees, lawn furniture and garden hoses.

She sounds bored to me. I have always been of the mindset that a tired dog is a happy dog, which in turn makes for a happy owner. Not sure how much exercise you put on her, but whatever it is, I would increase it. At least daily walks or runs and make sure she has things she CAN chew like bones, rawhides, stuffed animals from the thrift store (you can get 10 of them for $2). Do your best to keep her busy and she will work out of it. If she gets something she is not supposed to have, take it away and give her something she CAN have. also like Bill said... dog proof your yard. Shes' chewing stuff up because she can get to it.

Will really be hard to move the trees? Will keep trying things. Was told that maybe spaying ammonia on garden hoses may keep her from going to them. But that would be just a temporary fix.

I've got a teenage foster dog right now, thats a lot like yours.
She would chew up a Sherman tank, if left in the backyard.
She's chewed water hoses in half, and even dug up and chewed the cable line.
I just try to keep her busy, or put her up.
She'll get better with age.

Dog A. Needs more exerscise, tired dogs sleep.
B. Needs more supervision... at least for a while
C. Will likely bennifit from an ecollar. Ive never had to turn mine up past 3... they are magic once you get a feel for them and the dog

They don't always grow out of it. My 9 year old lab still chews on stuff. Can't even keep firewood in the yard, she EATS mesquite logs, she'll EAT one of the large raw hide bones in one sitting, tennis balls are gone in minutes...only chew toy I've found that she can keep awhile is deer antlers. Try to tire them out, we run her around the block and play fetch for an hour as much as possible. Giving them stuff they can chew really helped, bored dogs are bad dogs.

I've sprayed bitter bite from Petco on hoses and lawn chairs and it helps, but doesn't work if she really wants it.

8pointdrop, Sounds like mine.

As far as supervision, my wife and I both work so that wont work. She has half an acre to run in while I am at work. I understand taking things away that she can't get to but trees and underground wiring cannot be moved nor do I want to. So far the ammonia and bleach concoction has kept her away from garden hose and extension cord since I sprayed it.
