Garmin bought Tri-Tronics and they still make a good product (the Pro 550) but I personally feel like they (Garmin/Tri-Tronics) aren't really growing the "electronic collar" side of their business and spending money on research and development. This is just personal opinion and I could be totally incorrect but I feel like Dogtra has passed them as being the leader in the e-collar world. With that said, the Pro 550 is a very nice collar with a tube still transmitter. And you would be pleased it.

I love my Dogtra Edge RT. (I have had both the Pro 550 and the Dogtra Edge RT and I am much happier with the Dogtra Edge RT for several reasons mostly consistent level and quick correction). Both collars are very similar in function and style. Also, people like the Dogtra Arc if you like a smaller transmitter for your hand.

I would stay away from other brands. But that's just me.

I have been using the Sportdog 425 for years. It is small and lightweight. I have never had any issues or needed to replace the battery in 4 years. A friend of mine had a battery go and Sportdog overnighted it to North Dakota while he was hunting. They have great service.

I'm a tri tronics guy so now I go with Garmin. The 550 is top shelf. I think you would also like the sport pro. A lot of collar for the money with a small hand held control that is a good hunting collar.

Garmin Alpha 100, e-collar and GPS tracking in one. I am up to two handhelds and eight TT-15 collars...not sure my dogs are worth that much.

You need more range with a pointing dog.

Re: Best shock collar - 10/25/17 10:46 PM

I got the garmin sport pro and like it a lot.

When I was collar conditioning my pup, I was really wanting more granular levels of stimulation, other than the 10 provided, even FF'n my pup I wanted more. But now that I'm past all that, the sport pro is perfect, I don't need any more than the 10 levels provided. What I really like about it is that it is small, easy to hold, ajust levels, and operate with one hand.

I was tempted to buy another collar just from training, and use the sport pro for hunting, but I think the sport pro will work fine for both now.

I think it depends on what you have used in the past, and how well that collar held up.
Next is how soft, or driven was your past dogs. Then you have to think about range.

I hated Sportdog, due to a experience with one of their collars.
The dog would be in range, and had been ecollar condition for years.
It seemed like the collar would just lose signal to it every so often.
You didn't know when it was going to happen. But you knew it would.

Went to TT and loved the collars.
They take a beating, using them for hunting 7 months out of the year.

Garmin took over, and changed them.
I've played with the Garmin collars bought by other people.
I still prefer the old TT collars.
I don't need all the bells, and whistles.
I need a work horse. I should have bought as many of the TT collars, as I could get my hands on. Instead I just bought one extra, and then they were gone.

Dogtra will be my next collar.

Re: Best shock collar - 10/27/17 03:43 PM

The Alpha does have a ton of bells and whistles and options that I do not use but hunting hounds that can range huge distances when hunting lions and bears, the shocking and tracking range is a must.
I loved the old Tritronics e-collars but hated that I had to put one collar on my dogs for training and another for location. The Garmim Alpha shows exactly where your dog is on a map. I download the area that I am hunting and it shows an aerial photo and where my dogs is on that map. This also helps to find a road that might get closer to the dogs when they tree and can save a lot of steps in rugged terrain.

I use the SportDog 1802 and have for 6 years with no problems. I take the collars to a local “Batteries Plus” store to get them replaced.

Sportdog 1825 is the best I have ever used. Works as advertised. Will get a bad dogs attention if required. Not cheap but good equipment.
