Car Sick Pup

My 9 month old Brittany pup is still getting car sick when he rides inside the pickup, in his crate. He starts drooling almost immediately, then looses whatever is in his stomach. If it's empty, he has the dry heaves. We are talking even short rides, like the two mile trip to the park. When we get there, is seems fine and good-to-go, but I hate seeing him sick and the cleanup is not fun either.

Any hints on helping this?

If I let him ride in the back of the truck (we have chain in the back that keeps them from jumping over the side) he is OK, but I don't really like him riding any distance like this. Riding in the back end will definitely not work for trips to the Quail lease in a couple of months and I don't look forward to 3 1/2 hour trips with smell of dog puke.

I had a Redbone Hound I took in that had lived in a family's back yard and never been hunting and I doubt they ever took it anywhere in a vehicle. Not even to the vet. It had a similar car sick problem. It got better over a very long time enough that she stopped getting sick, but that was riding with up to 3 other hounds three nights a week. It just acclimated like one gets sea legs.
I would never feed or water that hound the few hours before a long ride. A vet should be able to get you something to give the dog on long road trips/traveling.

My GSP would get sick when he rode INSIDE the truck for the first 2 years I had him. I could put him in a crate in the back and he was fine. Eventually he got over it and is fine no matter where he rides now. Put the crate in the back and see if that doesn't solve your problem.

We found with our pup that as soon as he started drooling (prior to the puke), we would give him a pork rind...seemed to help. They tend to make your mouth really dry.

Most outgrow it.

We fed ours a bit of candied ginger when they were learning to ride in the truck. They got to be seasoned travelers quickly.

my boykin does the exact same thing and i just asked the vet and it is b/c they are likely nauseous. there are drugs out there you can give them about 45min before the car ride and i am going to try them. message me to follow up if you want to know how it goes. good luck on your end though

I had a lab that did this all the time. What I did was fairly simple. I had a Dairy Queen less that a mile away. I would load him in the truck and take him to dairy queen. I would buy a small ice cream or yogurt cone, park in the parking lot, load him in the bed and give him the ice cream. I did this every day, by day 10 he was jumping in the truck ready to go and by day 20 he was cured and would have driven the truck if I had let him. Never had a problem. He had ridden earlier and I never had a problem then evidently something happened that made him change. It was simple and he loved it. Had him for 14 years and never had a problem.

Sounds like back of the truck is the ticket.

I tried the back of the truck (every other day trips to a place for him to run). No luck on that, he still got sick.
I tried a small snack 15 min before traveling...that just resulted in a bigger mess.

It was time a checkup and some shots, so I ask the vet about the car sick thing. She said to try 1 or 1 1/2 Benadryl tables about 30 minutes before hitting the road. When I asked if that was going to make him sleepy or drowsy, she just laughed at me while she watched him bounce around room like jumping bean.

did the benadryl work? mine is still having the same issue

YES it works wonders with Rye.

Ive seen no difference between 1 pill and 1 1/2 pills, so I just toss him one pill 30-45 min before we need to leave. up to about 3 hours, that single dose seems to be good, we have not tried anything longer...that test will have to wait for Oct 27th

I've seen no indication that it slows him down any.

He's 41#.
