Anyone use non normal dogs?

Anyone use non normal dogs? - 03/06/13 03:12 AM

So I would love to have a retreiver but it doesnt look like it is in the cards. However, In the past week I have taught my border collie to fetch using some whole doves. I was just wondering if anyone thinks its worth a shot to even keep training him. He is just under 1 year old and has a drive to please. Here is a video of him tonight. The best thing I've seen from him is that if he didnt see where the dove fell, he uses his nose to find it.

I'll say this I have a britt and also a blue heeler mix. And if my wife would let me I would hunt the heeler cause e has crazy good bird senses. He will retreve and my duck and has never had training. He has had 2 knee surgerys so wife has put him o the couch with her.

I say if they will retreive and like doing it why not. Just watch how cold or hot they get keep cool during dove season and earl during duck good luck

Funny, when I was growing up, we had a border collie that loved to dove hunt, but not as good of a nose as a retriever. Then one day my brother was given a lab. We knew nothing about how to train a retriever, and our border collie was really a working dog for goats and cows. Anyways, we got them to team up, we would shoot a dove, both would go to look, usually lab would find bird, and BC would retrieve, ah good times!

Would you take a golf club to the plate if you were playing baseball?

I bet there has been many a game of street ball played with an old golf club because it was all they had.

Pheasant hunting with my brittany on a TPWD hunt on lake granger I was assigned a field with a couple cajuns from louisiana who showed up at the gate with a pitt. I witnessed it's first point of the day just inside the gate. Though not stylish, it did whoa, and a pheasant flushed and was killed. That evening camped next to those guys and sharing their campfire, I apologised and ate the words they overheard me say that morning. They limited on pheasants both days and we killed nothing over my brittany. As they put it, "you can put a whoa on anything".

Years later while training a runt walker hound to daytime hunt rabbits I remembered that day with the cajuns and ended up training my walker hound to hunt quail. She scented on the ground mostly and tracked them, then flushed them. Though she would not retrieve, I killed many a quail in front of her on those grayson county hills.

This started my search for a single versatile dog to train to do everything and I did eventually find her. There are not many types of hunting and kinds of animals I have not hunted with my Vizsla Blaze over the last 8 years. But then she is half from Louisiana.

There's documentation out there of bluetick coonhounds being trained for schutzhund 2. And from what I understand 1 or 2 we're GRNCH's. If you put the time into it any dog can be trained for just about anything problem is I don't have the time for it...

Border Collies were hunting dogs many many years ago. They have very sensitive ears and the shot sound usually turns them from hunting. There was some extensive intelligence testing of dogs several years ago, Border Collies scored well above 2nd place. You could teach a Border Collie to drive if he/she could get their little hands around the wheel. Go hunt em up, and for the record, we were checking a pasture horseback after gathering the cattle out of it one day and my BC got to acting "birdy" which she often did when there was cattle in the brush. She flushed a covey of quail. If you really study them, not a lot of difference in the Border Collie and the Brittany a 100 or so years ago.

If you take the time to train him right then I wouldn't doubt you could get the pup on doves and ducks. The satisfaction would be good too!

I've heard stories about blue lacys being used as retrievers. Why not border collies?

When I was a kid in East Tx. I hunted birds, deer , coon, squirrels, ducks, ect..I used everything from Black & Tan Hounds to Catahoula's, and a Chow I had that w/1/2 Lab..Seems if you kill animals over them and they find what you want they will try and fill the bill. Maybe not as well as dogs bred for the trip,
but back then we had some pretty hi powered Eng. Pointers who were a joke w/most birds compared to my Catahoula..but I worked him about every day..plus he wasn't as inbred to compete so not very high tension..I used to watch my Uncles Border Collies work
some wild game occasionally also..and they would bite..DD

Hi, you all have good knowledge about the dogs, I also want a dog for the home security but I don't know so much about the breeds of the dog, so please suggest me a dog which could live alone in the home when I go away. thanks in advance.

Andrew, I'm not sure I get what you are asking. Are you asking about what kind of dog can live inside while you are gone to work for 8-10 hrs or a week while you are gone? Almost all dogs can make a day. None would be advisable for a week. With training any dog will make a good house dog. If you just want security and a non hunting dog, Old trusty German Shepherds, Dobermans, Rottweilers, and almost any herding dog will do the trick. Curs are a good all purpose dog with good territory sense, but if you raise one to protect the house be prepared to stop him/her if a friend comes in the door.

Apples and oranges...Some will get on here and tell you that other breeds have better noses etc...the simple fact is the olfactory abbilities in all dogs are about the same. Just ask any Police dog handler who will tell you his german shepherd will sniff out drugs as good as any lab. Some dogs have been bred to excell in certain jobs, thats why we use those breeds. To answer Your question I would say YES its certainly worth keeping up with the training, especially since you imply that getting another dog isnt in the cards. So yes keep up the good work and if nothing else you will have the enjoyment of hunting with a good buddy. Best of luck and kep us posted
