Coccidiosis Treatment - 03/05/13 05:14 PM
I was just sending an email to help out another breeder who had an outbreak of coccidiosis. In responding with some advice, I realized this would be a helpful post for some others who keep multiple dogs - especially if they frequent land where chickens, ducks, goats or sheep may be.
Despite the stigma that it "MUST" come from a dirty environment, Coccidia is a protozoa that stays around and propagates easily, so it's not uncommon to deal with it when caring for rural dogs. It's easily passed along via the ground, water or utility items from birds or livestock to dogs. Unpleasant for older dogs, it can cause diarrhea or even vomiting and if allowed to progress, can be lethal to small pups.
When I broke down the math to help this other breeder concerning medications, I was amazed that I spend $60 where the same amount of medicine, purchased thru a vet would cost in upwards of $2,900.00. For those that would find this info useful, here is some info from my email to the other breeder to file away for future use:
Your vet is right, once it's on the property, coccidia just keeps going around and around. Deal with it the same way you do parasites, because they never go away, either.
I keep a gallon jug of Sulfadimethoxine to treat all of our critters. It is also great for respiratory infections, etc. Do not overuse or a resistance will be built up. Older dogs can eat Deccox crumble and seem to like it, but don't use crumble on pups because it's hard to control the dosage. I use the crumble mostly for my poultry. You can buy the Deccox crumble at any feed store.
Liquid sulfadimethoxine (12.5% solution): http://www.allivet.com/p-2108-sulfadimet...CFWamPAod7mAAVA

That gallon bottle will last you FOREVER! Just 2cc/10 lbs first day, then 1cc/10lbs for the next 6 days. Dogs hate the taste of it and makes them froth at the mouth, but just put some in beef or chicken broth or mix in with canned food. They'll happily gobble it down!
Buying it this way is infinitely cheaper than Albon! First of all, it's 2-1/2 times more concentrated and you don't need a prescription. You would need to buy 158 (60 mL @ 5% suspension) bottles of Albon for the same amount of medicine in the gallon bottle of sulfadimethoxine. At $18/bottle of Albon, that's $2,850.00!!!! Buy the gallon jug, save a ton of money, be ready any time it strikes and sleep better at night.
