Breeder recomendation needed

Breeder recomendation needed - 02/19/13 02:11 PM

After a disappointing failed acquisition of a dog I am now looking into a puppy. I am looking at a female only. In order of preference I am interested in:
1) German Wirehaired Pointer
2) German Shorthaired Pointer
3) ESS
4) English Pointer
5) Lab (red, yellow, silver, or chocolate)
6) Brittany

I am looking in the 500 dollar range which I know makes a couple of the options impractical. I am very serious as my 3 year old was really psyched up for a dog..

Thanks TDH. But it looks like you said they are 950. My wife would kill me for suggesting that... if you know the breeder is willing to make a deal pm me please... the parents both look amazing ... unfortunately that is the reason I said that I know 500 is a big stretch on a couple of the breeds.

As an update to that I did call, however it's as I suspected he wants the 950 which is reasonable. I'm not looking to screw someone over with a low offer so I'm gonna say Shorthaireds are probably what I'm most interested in with labs a close second. If you know someone with a registered litter of wirehairs that might be willing to get within 650 I might be able to go that far.

Anyone heard anything about James Spouse in Normagee, or heritage GSPs in Rhome?

If you'd still consider a brittany, I'm pretty sure Tyson at oksetters.com has an upcoming litter and from what I hear his britts are very nice. I haven't a clue what he'll be asking for them, but you might give him a call. He's a real nice guy. (580)513-1055

I think the only stretch is number 1 and 5. 5 only because of the fancy pants colors.

1 and 4 will probably be the most plentiful and cheapest. Good luck

Big Joe I know what I'm about to say may seem off the wall but I would suggest you look into the Spinone Italiano. There are not that many in the US however I have owned all types of dogs including hounds, retrievers, pointers, Labs,Brittneys,German short hairs, etc.
My 4th lab died 2 years ago of old age and my wife surprised me with a Spinone, a dog that my daughter had done a ton of research on. I must say I was upset as to the cost when I found out. Kody has turned out to be the best hunting dog I have ever owned and he is the greatest companion.
He works a field like I've never seen before, he points with class and he retrieves better than any lab I have owned. In addition he takes to water with a passion. He is very loyal and follows me every where. He sits at the sliding door for an hour every night waiting for me to come home. If you want a guard dog who is agressive this is not the breed. If you want an untiring hunting friend who will carry his weight look at the Spinone

Sry for a late response,

DuckedUp: the main reason the Brittany is so low is my wife doesn't like the orange and white color (only ones I've found) I looked at the website though and it seems like it wouldn't be a bad breeder but a long drive for me. I know of a couple Brittany breeders closer if I decide to go that route.

MS: I think you meant 2 and 4 would be most abundant. But the labs are right there too... I've got a couple breeders on this site that I'm still thinking about within my price range.

Flash point: Thanks for the input. I really don't like the way they look and all I've seen were as expensive a GWPs. If I was looking to spend that kind of money I would be on my way to TDHs friend as he seems like he knows what he is doing and a genuine good guy.
To add a bit more info I want a versatile dog vorhe most part. The most hunting I am going to do is dove and maybe some duck, and I have found a few places for quail nearby and a place for pheasant in KS. This is the main reason behind Brittanys being so low on the list. Above all this I need a dog with a defined off switch in the house around my son and if my in laws come back.

I have owned a Brittany and Drahthaar in the past. I now have a one year old female GSP and just put a deposit down on another. My Brittany was a softy. The Drahthaar was an awesome hunter and stubborn.

Last year I got my first GSP. It has been a fun year with training and hunting this season. We decided to go with the same breeder this time and will be getting our 2nd GSP female in May. After lots of research, you can get a great GSP for the money.

Ask lots of questions and don't buy a pup based on price. We talked with a breeder last week that was trying to sell a pup for $500, but after asking lots of questions the mom doesn't hunt and dad dove hunts. I want an upland dog that puts its nose to ground. I'm always skeptical of the last pup. Why hasn't it sold? Remember that dog will be with your hunting partner and family member for the next 10+ years.

I have a male GSP from Heritage in Rhome and I love him. Great nose and relentless natural retriever.

These are great so far. Hopefully I will be able to make a deal soon. Please let me know if you have a litter or know of a litter in my price range. At very worst it can be some free advertising if I don't decide to purchase.

I need to add that I want FULL AKC registration without an extra fee. I thought this would be a gimme but apparently there are a lot of stuck up breeders that think they know better than everyone else what makes a dog worth breeding and want to restrict you without caring what the pup may become.
