Anyone dealt with mange?

Anyone dealt with mange? - 08/03/11 12:29 AM

So about a week ago our basset stunk really bad, but we thought he just got into something, so after a few days we took him to get groomed (he goes about every 3 weeks anyway). Whatever they did helped, but he still has an odor. Not near as bad, however. Well today he went in to get neutered and the very called and said that she knew right away from the small so she tested him abe he's positive for mange. It has kind of floored us. Vet said there's no telling how he got it and it could be hereditary. She put him on sone pills, but from research my wife has been doing it is really hard to treat abe could be chronic. My wifes a crying mess. This dog is 85% indoor, sleeps in a crate, greys groomed, etc, and it kinda makes us sick that he got this.
Wife says he stinks bad today. (I'm outta town)
Anyways, any thoughts?

Mange? Demodectic or sarcoptic? No need for tears.....there is a cure for both.

I have never had one with it but it is very treatable from what I understand. Like the link above, I have always been told Ivomec is the best way to go & it is relatively inexpensive. Ask the vet how much to give.

Usually the treatment depends on the severity of the mange. In puppys that may only have one or two small spots it can clear up on its own. Anymore than that it needs to be treated. Demodectic is not the end of the world, especially in a dog that's not going to be used for breeding. Its not contagious like some of the other manges. It can be hereditary our show up in a weak immune system. Some breeders will breed dogs that have had localized demodectic mange but not ones that had generalized demodectic mange. I owned a collie 20 years ago that developed it as a pup. Treated her for it and never had a problem later.

The vet gave her some stuff to put between his shoulders every 2 weeks for 3 months. Said it wasn't bad enough to need any other treatment.
thanks for the help.
