Looking for a spot on a Lease

Looking for a spot on a Lease - 06/10/21 12:07 AM

I never thought it would so difficult to give someone money for a place to hunt. Been looking like many other hunters but have been unsuccessful so I’ll post here in hopes someone knows of something.

Looking for a spot on a lease that will allow my kiddos (maybe wife is she decided to join me) to sit in the blind with me. They don’t hunt but love eating the game. Maybe one day they’ll hunt but as of today they’re not interested in killing just eating.

I’m looking for something within 2-3 hours of San Antonio. Would prefer west or north but would consider all directions as I know everyone seems to looking in the hill country and west of SA at the moment.

Don’t really need water or electric but it would be nice and I have a travel trailer so no lodging is needed.

I’d like to spend around $3000 but would entertain higher price for the right place. I have feeders, blind, and feed year round to include protein.

Thanks!

It's difficult to find a good lease. One with decent game populations, camp accommodations and affordable. Often that means driving further than you like. There are places that will take your money and leave you disappointed. I've had several deerless leaaes over the years.

I’d love to drive further but family situation doesn’t allow it at the moment. I’m flexible on price though so if someone has something that may be higher I’d entertain it. Figured $3000 is about average I know some places are more though.

Seems most of the places I’ve been contacted about lately want a deposit without contract to review or seeing the place. I’m not comfortable with that.

Still hopeful I’ll come across something.

Fltmedic, from my experience someone asking for a deposit without seeing the place or any contract to review would be very unusual and would be a red flag.

I wouldn’t be comfortable sending deposit sight unseen either.

My thoughts as well, if you can’t produce a contract for me to review and at a minimum provide pics to peak my interest than more than likely you have nothing to lease. To me at least, I’m not sending money for a deposit sight unseen.

I normally come across leases up here all the time with as many land owners as I come in contact with but this year I haven't found one In Texas yet. Wet weird year,, I did find a couple small places in Oklahoma but those normally don’t start poping up until around the end of June when leases expire or more times than not idiots are kicked off.

It’s def hard to find a place. Especially a good one, and as for the putting a deposit or leasing sight unseen you will be surprised how many people are crazy enough to do that but it’s a lot more than one would think

Still looking, price is negotiable depending on what ranch offers. Max would more than likely be $5k.

Fltmedic have you checked out the TPWD lease page? https://www2.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/planning/hunt_lease/listlease.php

I’ve seen a handful of leases pop up on there for one gun spots needing to be filled.

I have, no dice so far. Between there and about 4-5 other lease sites haven’t had a successful lead. Thank you though.

Perhaps you have done this, check with the chamber of commerce in the areas you are interested in. Visit the feed stores in these areas as well possible hardware stores. The places where there may be an interest in deer hunting.

Wilhunt I check CoC pages and email them, just not recently. Same with feed stores, was planning on making some rounds this weekend up through the areas I’m interested in and leaving a note in general stores, feed stores, etc. I haven’t ever left a note on someone’s gate but have heard some have been successful. Seems weird to me, but may consider it.

May be a matter of being in the right place at the right time. A while back the chamber on commerce in San Saba had a post on facebook i think about deer leases. If you have not checked there i would call and at least get your name on a list if they have one. Lots of hunting there.

Actually just called about a place on their site, you’re reply reminded me as I found it late last night. Maybe it’ll pan out, thanks for the reminder!

I think your biggest problem is finding a spot for one person, most groups like to keep their group together with people they know. I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just hard. Besides cost the main reason I gave up deer hunting. You can always try public.

Re: Looking for a spot on a Lease - 06/27/21 06:05 PM

You may be right, unfortunately the group of friends I hunted with the longest is dismantled for many reasons. I am hopeful I will find a new group to assimilate with that I can build friendships with and learn from. I’m still young in this hunting game (not necessarily age), got a late start but love it.

Openings occur for many reasons. Agree groups like too stay to gather but situations such as health, relocation, finance and more all contribute to single openings. It still is a matter of being at the right place at the right time and reacting.

I ran a lease for 13 years and there were times we needed one hunter to fill a spot - hang in there and be diligent on checking everyday because that is the best way to join a group - good luck

Thank you guys, I didn’t mention it but since age groups was brought up I’m 44 past party stage of my
Life. Tidbits about me: If you need help finding/dressing a deer, filling your feeders or just wanna chat it up around the campfire that’s my style. Trophy deer isn’t necessarily what I’m looking for but I still target older bucks and enjoy getting does as well. I’m about management, took a while to learn and I’m still learning but having an opportunity to hunt and enjoy the woods is what I’m looking for. That and keeping my kiddos engaged in the outdoors. Don’t drink don’t care if you do, don’t smoke other than cigars and I don’t think I’ve ever had one at deer camp. Just easy going guy, medic by trade.

Don’t matter prices going up. Y’all will pay them for less acres. Just a matter of time
