I'm a Pond Boss Mod. There are some East Texas guys there that can probably give you a lead.

Make damn sure that you get an experienced pond digger vs a dirt pusher. Lots of guys can clear land, and push dirt but pond digging is an art.

Drive around the area looking for ponds. Stop and ask who they used, if they would recommend him, and what they would have done differently.

One thing I would do, if this is your first rodeo, is buy Mike Otto's book, Just Add Water. Mike has been building ponds for over 40 years and is a co-owner of Pond Boss. It will save you money and let you lose less sleep.

I’m ignorant about ponds, but other than ensuring that you have some type of base or liner so you don’t have your water leech out. And depth/slope if you don’t want evaporation to be a continuous issue what comes into play that makes a pond designer/constructor different then a dirt pusher? I am asking because I’m really considering buying 25 acres that is 1/2 low lying for a duck hunting.

Jorge, the difference is huge. Knowledge of soils is a biggie when constructing the dam. And knowing how to cut down the leaks. And, all dirt leaks.

Sandy soils don’t work. 100% clay also doesn’t work. You need a good sandy loam. This stuff needs to be knitted together.

Rocky soil? Good luck. Total clay? Clay cracks when dry.

Do you have enough runoff to fill a pond? That also needs to be calculated. Size of dam to contain the water? I assume you’re building a home for fish.

Read the book by Otto. It’s chump change compared to the price of diesel.

And make sure you have a large enough spillway if you get a flood.
