MLD? Bucks allowed and kind of bucks per spot leased? What is a trophy or management or cull?
Foot traffic problems from foreign exchange students? Maintain your own personal blind location(s) and feeder(s) or community blinds/feeders to hunt where you want, when you want? Landowner have cattle grazing or is it leased out grazing rights? Any poaching issues? Oilfield traffic?
Good questions!
not MLD. we're working with the landowner to get there. we explained it's not about killing more/less deer because we can invite guests, it's about getting that late part of january where it's still good down here. October hunting sucks here.. way too hot.
right now, we're sticking with 1 trophy (7.5 years 150+) and one cull (5 and under 120" (maybe 125, it's up for debate). no spikes can be shot until they're 5
Criteria for deer will change as we go along. Last year was our first year on the place, and considering the drought conditions during horn growing season, we were very selective on what we shot. basically, we didn't kill anything good. the landowner was very conservative on harvest numbers... I think because it was our first year. I don't know what recommendation will be, but he does want the trash killed off the place. I wouldn't consider this a high volume meat lease though. we'll just have to see how the density is from year to year. density is probably around 15-16 acres per deer.
I'm sure there is some foot traffic, but from what landowner and ranch manager say, they avoid the main road areas of the ranch (where camp and houses are). I didn't really see any evidence all year from them, but I know a couple times they were on an adjacent ranch. we had zero problems with the camp, or blinds. We're definitely not on the exchange student freeway though.
everyone is responsible for setting up a blind/feeder, but we will be community blinds. You can have priority to hunt your spot when you're there, but otherwise, it's community. This gives everyone access to the entire spread, not just the spot by the train tracks where the hobos live. I believe in helping out.. with the 7 feeder pens we set up last year, I helped or built 6 of them... I'm somewhat of an expert with circles now.
landowner runs cattle. It's a season lease, but we can get access in the off season to do any work we need to. We just have to give him a call in the off season to make sure our plans don't interfere with his cattle operations.
there are no active gas/oil wells on our lease. The only traffic is for a pipeline valve station that's in the lease.. I don't even know how often they check it. maybe a couple times a month?
poaching activity... I don't think so. We're off 649 by a few miles, so certainly there is no road hunting. There is an 1100 acre place sort of inside our lease that I believe day hunts, but they're high fenced out. the ranch manager is out checking cattle all the time. they would have to be pretty ballsy to poach. our western and southern border is high fence.. east side is low fence with some 300-1000 acres neighbors. north is low fence, but bordered by the same landowner.
