Seymour Deer Hunting

Does anyone have any experience hunting near Seymour in Baylor county? Looking at a lease and wanted to know what the expectations are for hunting deer in that area. My goals:

- Good whitetail numbers (aka seeing 5-10 deer on an average hunt)
- Mature bucks 130+
- Good rut activity (when does it occur?)
- Some other kind of game (turkeys, pigs, ect)
- Rolling terrain (I like having places to glass from as i do a lot of still hunting/spot and stalk)

Any insights/opinions would be appreciated!

Here’s my thoughts, considering my limited knowledge......


1). If you hunt a big wheat field with feeders, yes likely. Hunting a plain mesquite pasture, with no brush control, likely not.
2). Yes, a few on camera at night mostly. You have to hunt a lot to see 1 in the day.
3). Yes, whenever it gets good & cold
4). Lotsa pigs, some turkey
5). A little here & there. Unless you have 200+ acres, you won’t have enough to spot & stalk. Go get a good stand (big enough to lay down in) & corn feeder, put up a protein feeder with hog panels around it good, & get little heater for the stand on those cold days.

we hunted up there for 2 years leased a place west of seymour had decent deer lots of pigs even had soem audad on cams some turkeys and quail were good the first year we killed a 135 inch deer and a 179 inch deer on our place but the area that we were on dont expect to see 10-20 deer per sit we did see some deer most times we hunted just not the numbers you can expect in the hill country or san angelo area

We are west of Seymour. Like most counties, some areas hold more deer than others. Water, cover and food sources are key. If you are near or on the river, or have creek beds you will have game. Wheat fields can be a good draw, but there is a lot of wheat in the area, so it depends on how much wheat is around you. Neighbors are also key. Some areas will have the deer numbers you are asking about. Other areas not as much. The area has the potential for really big bucks. The creeks and river bottoms are going to hold turkeys. Hogs are prevalent all over as are coyotes. Dove and duck hunting can be excellent. Rut peaks mid-November. The buck I shot this year was attacked a few minutes after I shot him by a big 8. It was the first weekend of November. The 15th to 25th Is when I see more bucks with does, not just chasing. Terrain varies. There is more rolling terrain east and south. West and north is pretty flat.
