Possible LongTerm Hunting Opportunity

Possible LongTerm Hunting Opportunity - 09/08/14 08:12 PM

I always hesitate to put things like this out on an open Forum, but I took a chance a few years back and it worked out, so I guess I'll give it another go.

I have a private family ranch a few hours west of San Antonio. Pretty well set up for hunting. Cabins, wells, blinds, feeders, etc... Had some quality THF guys helping me out on the place for the past few years, but the military sent them elsewhere for the time being, so I find myself a bit short handed. I need to keep the 'heavy lifting' dialed back a bit due to recent heart surgery.

This is not a lease offer, but I'd be open to discussing a long term arrangement for someone who is willing to help out on the place in exchange for ranch priveleges.

Looking for someone who has free time... I get out there at least once a month and work on things year round. Not interested in anyone who has conflicts every work weekend but is miraculously available all thru hunting season. There are year round hunting opportunities, and trips out there have a good mix of work and play. Looking for someone who does not have to make a long commute. San Antonio area guys are ideal, but Houston and DFW is a bit far to travel to this place. Looking for someone who wants to help make the place better and enjoy the benefits when the work is done. Not looking for someone who expects me to wait on them like they are guests on a paid hunt.

This is not a first-come-first-served guaranteed kind of offer. I want to find the best fit for the ranch, and if a couple of guys off of here sound like fits, we can discuss, maybe try a hog hunt and see how we mesh. I consider my previous THF guys good friends and we all got a lot out of our arrangement. That's ultimately what I am looking for again.

Vegans, fall down drunks, guys in hockey masks, and Obama supporters need not apply.

Drop me a line if you are interested and we can kick it around.

Wish your place was closer. I can build about anything and have the equipment to do it. I think the mileage would be a problem. I bet you'll find what you're looking for.

Hope so Fireman. I love being out there. Its a fun place to be, but even I wouldn't want to go more than about 3 hours to get there. Puting this offer out there cuz routine upkeep like any ranch or lease requires is just a bit more than I can handle myself.

How far from Ft Hood? Might be that Sapper Titan knows someone, from his posts I think he will be in training and then Korea for a good chuck of the up coming season. But he might have some military contacts that could help you out.

I prefer the SA area for truck-pooling reasons, but I'm open to Fort Hood. The drive from there may be just a bit longer. My last guys came down from San Angelo. Main thing is getting a commitment to show up regularly. The further you are away, I've found, the easier it is to find something else more pressing to do. When I had a lease on Falcon Lake, that 5+ hour drive was a killer, and I admit, I blew off a few trips cuz I wasn't up for all the driving.

And I don't want to sound like a slave driver. I understand everyone has a life with other conflicts. We may not always be on the same schedule, but I want a ranch gang that is willing to get out there regularly and have fun together when schedules match up.

Try one of the military installation in San Antonio, check with the WMR office. That is Welfare, Morale and Recreation, at least that is what it is called in the Army, not sure about the USAF, but they should have he same set up. As to getting someone reliable, my money would be on a resounding yes, I may be Army, but I have et some great people that were stationed at Dyess AFB.

I've done hunts with the military, but those were usually some of the wounded warrior groups for weekend hunts. These last guys happened to be military, and they were great ranch buds, but I am not locked into that. I always read on here how there's no place for guys to hunt, so I thought I'd see if there were any likely THF candidates. If I was outside of Dallas I'd probably be over-run with THF guys, but not as many SA area guys on here looking.

Just to give a few more details on the place: 256 acres. oak and cedar and limestone with lots of elevation changes so it plays bigger - Lots of hogs and varmints, good spring turkey, white tail, and some exotics. Have a nice cabin with kitchen and outdoor bbq for private lodging separate from my cabin. Bathroom with shower. Currently running 5 hunting blinds and 2 protein feeders, and a food plot. Mostly nice large double blinds and several bow stands. 5 hog traps available for use. Cleaning station. Numerous water troughs across the ranch, which is surrounded by "dry' neighbors.

Thanks... appreciate the sentiment. They did a real good job fixing me up, and I'm bouncing back strong. Was not a pleasant 6 month ride, but it coulda been worse... Just have to be smart and not try to tackle too much on my own just yet...

I'm fine but I've been swamped so I've fallen behind on this. I'm still looking at those interested and was gonna talk to a few more yet (Guero is still on the list to talk with). I do want to make it clear that it is only for 2-3 regulars and I've had a number of guys respond.
