Tips on buying some hunting land..

What counties or region should I TRY and buy in? Looking to buy 100-300 acres, is this enough to produce some nice bucks?

depends on where you live and how close you wanna be to your lease... are you planning on high fencing the place or low fenced? 100-300 would be plenty of land imo...especially if it was real thick

Well I live in Denton and 3 hours would be all I want to travel because of gas. I currently have a lease in Eastland County. Found some land right by mine but looking for other options.

100-300 acres, low fenced, is really not enough land to "produce" big bucks, at least not in the classical sense of QDM. Now if your neighbors are participating in some sort of co-op QDM program, you might have some success. Or you could alwasys, just be lucky. Big deer are taken every year on small acre properties.

But realistically, for instance, if the neighbors are all shooting the first 1.5 YO buck they see, you probably would have a hard time seeing any mature bucks on your place.

if you bought a tract that was thick brush with some water element around 250-300 acres and high fenced it you could have a nice little hunting preserve

Don't HF 300 acres, for the love of all things holy and sacred...

It's plenty of land, especially if you have large neighbors. Have a buddy with 400 acres in Uvalde County that's low-fenced and hardly managed at all, and they have a few studs show up every year.

Depending on the layout of the land, 300 acres is way more than enough to have a very significant bedding area that may hold quite a few deer. Between my neighbor and myself, we only have 100 acres, and at any point in time, there are at least 20 deer between our 2 properties. Not because the population is 1 deer/5 acres in our area, but because the natural bedding spots for deer happen to be the 40 or so acres of woods we hold.

300 acres is enough if you have the right topography and cover.

we've got 140s on almost 300 acres LF in deep east tx, but that's about all we can expect unless a freak of nature comes along.

Our family has 200 acres,with access to about 560.near Bluff dale in Erath county,we mostly shoot trash deer and let the others walk if their not bigger than what we have on the wall.But we get great bucks on camera fortunately for them its usually at night,but yes you can grow big deer if you and your neighbors are on the same page.

I guess it's all about perspective, but I would cherish a 140 from a LF deer in East Texas for the rest of my life. That's a great buck. People are getting warped.

you do cherish shooting them, but when you have to sit and watch 130-170" lf East Tx deer that will likely die of old age, it makes you wish you can get them grown where you have the okay to pull the trigger.

Same here Cameron,to me a low fence 140 with symmetrical horns is a really good deer.

to consistantly produce big bucks (big in the sense of 160+ each year)unless you hit the jackpot and found a terrific tract, its gonna take a high fence to pull it off on 300 acres.

Make sure you can get a Ag exempt. Start a hunting company "not a DBA" Do dove hunts & a few deer hunts. You will be able to write off mileage & feed, deer stands, feeders. Als keep reallt good records for tax purposes. Oh yeah you can also write off your interest if you have a corporation. Go talk to a CPA they can set you up.

Easier to go with a cattle company and buy some pasture trash to get all the write-offs.
