New Mexico Fully Outfitted Hunts 2021 - 01/19/21 05:12 PM

My name is Howard Dobbs with God's Country Outfitters in New Mexico. I'm licensed, insured and permitted. We are currently applying hunters for the 2021 hunting season. Your odds of drawing a tag are higher going thru a licensed outfitter. We hunt the Gila, and the Lincoln National forest. We do archery, rifle, muzzleloader, youth and mobility impaired hunts.

We do fully outfitted hunts for

***Elk***
***Mule deer***
***Coues deer***
***Oryx***
***Ibex***
***Antelope***

Curious. Why are the odds of drawing a tag higher going thru a licensed outfitter? Doe's it somehow give you preference points?

The reason is that 16% of the tags go to nonresidents for each hunt. 10% going thru a licensed outfitter and 6% chance if you try to draw a tag on your own.

Thanks

New Mexico doesn’t have preference points.

In addition to outfitters getting allocated a higher percentage of the tags (10% versus 6%), The odds are also higher because typically there are fewer submissions in a particular category in the licensed outfitter bucket (10%) versus non-resident bucket (6%). So fewer submissions, plus more tags results in a much higher probability of drawing a tag via an outfitter.

Looking at the 2020 results the probability of drawing a tag via an outfitter is significantly higher in the popular hunts. In my opinion, it makes you realize that if you want any meaningful shot of drawing a tag that you have to use an outfitter.
