587 Ranch review! - 11/21/17 11:20 PM

This is a current 11/17 – 11/20/2017 hunt review of the 587 Ranch outside Bend, Texas for those who may be interested. Tim Hefner and his brother, Jason, run the hunts there. Both are genuine nice guys. The ranch shares 2 miles of border with the Colorado Bend State Park. The deer numbers are simply outstanding. Every sit morning and evening (plus some mid day outings) we saw 10 – 15 bucks. Two thirds were eight pointers or better, and an equal amount of does. The cabin we stayed in was nice, clean, and sat on an elevated knoll looking over 600 yards of a narrow open space with two feeders visible.
The deer here are Texas Hill Country Whitetails. To those that may not know, these are small body/smaller antlered deer. Think Coues deer size critters. Does run 75 – 100 lbs. Bucks probably average 120 overall.
We hunted a three day/two night package, allowing us to take 3 deer each. On doe, one cull buck, and one management 8 point. We were successful in harvesting 3 bucks, and one doe. My wife lost one buck which counted against our allowance as a kill (blood drawn). The only reason we didn’t take our other doe is we ran out of room in our ice boxes!
Pigs are allowed as an add-on, but we didn’t get a chance. Tim went out on a night walk and tried for some pork as well, seeing a few, but no joy when we were there.
A basic elevated cleaning station for proper field dressing and quartering, a very nice “clean” table for processing your kill, and more willing hands than needed, were always available.
This is a “new” operation, in year 2 of its young life. A better place for a great meat hunt, youth hunt, introduction to deer hunting cannot be found. Serious hunters will have the opportunity to look over tons of bucks before making their selection. Big bucks are there. We had 6 wonderful Big Bucks frequenting multiple stands. A 13 pointer, 4 very good 10 pointers, and a pair of big 8’s.

I was hunting two particular big 8 pointers in the 130+” range that we never saw. Both brothers are wonderful trackers, despite the loss of my wife’s buck. They tracked it for over 800 yards before loosing the sparse blood trail.
If you want a hunt that is priced right (ours was $1500 for 3 deer each), run by knowledgeable hunter/owner’s, a good time with no stress (other than selecting one of many dozens of shooter bucks), by all means text or call Tim Hefner. He posts here under the 587 Ranch name, and screen name Bigcat. They own their ranch. They have good double blinds for gun, ladder stands for archers, and will make sure you get multiple opportunities each time you go out!
We, my wife and I, are not affiliated with the Hefner’s in any way except as clients, and honestly can verify this experience first hand. Call to hunt this place now!

Nice to see a good review of these boys. I had a ball with them on a pig hunt early this year! Great guys, and a nice property!

Ted, it was nice meeting you and your wife. She was a true hunter! Thanks for the review.

We do not have a website. People interested can shoot me an email. Timh@btjservices.com

We do not ever plan on being a full time outfitter. Our vision is to only cater to a few hunters (or groups) each year. We do this to but feed for the ranch and for improvements.

We only have late season doe/spikes left for this season BTW.
