Hub Blind HeadsUp

Hub Blind HeadsUp - 09/20/21 02:50 PM

Just a heads up to others on a minor item that can put the dampers on a "hub type" ground blind hunt. When I was hunting last week, I went to put up my Barronett 250 Ground blind. Second time I've use it ever. When I pulled it out of case, one of the hubs had come apart. Fortunately, I found the two parts. The nut that holds the hub (washer like piece on) had simply come off. When that happens all of the poles on the hub fall our of the pockets they fit into. While I was wanting to hunt I got the sheer joy of trying to put that hub back together. Picture a 6' Rubicks cube being assembled in a 35 mph wind. Took about an hour. Blind is essentially brand new. Finally got it back together and blind ready to go. My point is this: As I look at almost every brand of hub blind, I see at the center of the hub is a huge washer like piece with a nut in the center. Check your blinds before you go out. When I got home I took a socket and checked to see how the other hubs were. Two more were ready to go on probably the next trip. Two nights later, they had 35 mph winds and the blind blew into a plow and was torn substantially. Anyway, just a heads up. Might save you a blind or at the minimum screw up an opening day morning.

For my purpose, can u explain what a “hub” type is as compared to whatever else there is. I’m shopping for pop up.

Hub type blind is the common popup ground blind each side and the top have "hubs" to hinge the arms to hold in the side and top poles when expanded

Like this one is called a hub blind in the description. https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/cabelas-the-zonz-hub-ground-blind

Thanks Kmon. So the referenced “hubs” are on all sides and the top?? Are any pop ups not like that? Makes the door kinda weird it seems. Anyway, I can save this for my own thread on pop up shopping. Thanks for use of your thread.

Some are, there are ones that work about like the windshield sun protectors with 4 hoops one in each side and some that have poles with material attached that form a circle when assembled with a bunch of rod supports, these are usually smaller in diameter but are easy and quite to setup and stable but haven't seen one in a while.

https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/ameristep-doghouse-ground-blind?rrec=true is one of the ones that takedown and up like the solar windshield popout screens. Fast, easy and lighter weight but not as stable as hub style blinds.

Sorry guys. I was out of pocket for a while. Thanks for answering the other posts, Kmon. As usual, you were spot on with your answers. I have mixed emotions about hub vs the springsteel type blinds but only because I know how to fold the springsteel type (Ameristep Doghouse for ex).. The springsteel are a real pain until you figure out how to fold them. I'm not familiar with the windshield wiper types. I agree about the stability of the hub blinds and they are pretty easy to set up and take down. I just posted this because its easy to tighten that nut on the hub rather than have it come off and the legs fall out. Another way to describe the hub is kind of like the center of an umbrella and it functions much the same and yes, it is 4 sides and the top at least on the Barronett.
