Feeder build question....

Trying to work this out...

$10 for a barrel
$20 feeder leg kit
$35 for timer, motor, spinner and box
$20 for a Funnel
$15 for legs

$100 give or take plus time energy and effort to built.

$61 on Amazon for a feeder to your door.

Why am I building another feeder? Or trying to repair one even?

Can't imagine the lack of quality for $35. Sounds like a headache bud

I would suggest this leg kit and.......not using a $39 feeder motor kit

You get what you pay for in the wildlife feeder market.

You can build a feeder for $100 but it want last long and want feed most of the time. I have build 10 feeder in the last year and the best I can do is about $225 each with good parts

Tig, you are getting the best kind of advice above...the kind that is bought and paid for. Those who have been in the game a while have tried the cheaper spinner units and got tired of sitting in the stand and not having the feeder go off. Good strong legs on rhe barrel as pointed out above and a quality spinnner unit (will cost over $50} with varmit protection will last much longer and result in fewer headaches. Quality components definitely are worth the money in a feeder.

Agree wit the guys, spend the coin and be rid of a huge hunting headache, once you have a solid, reliable feeder, you wont have to wonder each time the sun comes up.

The issue I have is that Amazon has a basic Moultrie feeder for $61 dollars. No shipping. $61 to my door. The build it myself were all cheap end components and I know that.

The point is, why BUILD a crappy feeder, which at those prices it would be, versus buying one that has a brand behind it to support it? Or does Moultrie sell that bad of products now?


PS.....If I had the funds, trust me, I would have a BossBuck feeder and not worry about any of this

I agree if you are going to buy a crappy feeder in the first place.

Save your money and hand corn until you can buy one worth owning.

Fill up some empty coke liter sized bottles with corn lay em on their side without the cap.

It will be more reliable until you can save some money.

Good feeders are great, so don't get this misunderstood. But I bought 3 Walmart feeders for 80 bucks each in 2006, Guess what 2 of the 3 are still running great, the third one is done, due to a squirrel eating a big hole in it. I am still using the motor, box and controller from all of my original feeders. So a cheap timer and motor can last a very long time, they just won't throw corn as far as the bigger feeders. My newer feeders are nicer, but only because I got a smoking deal on them.

Couple of comparisons I would make between the $61 Amazon version and what you listed for parts for $100
1. This runs on 4 AA batteries. I'm assuming you would build something that has a 6V or 12V battery.
2. I'm making an assumption that your leg kit and legs would be 10x stronger than the thing on amazon. The Moultrie legs look like they would bend/twist at the slightest bit of pressure or wind.
3. Your barrel will probably hold 300/350 pounds of corn. I had to dig through the questions to see that the Moultrie only holds 160. So the capacities are vastly different.

If you want to get a Moultrie one that supports a 6V battery and an optional solar charger, you are now into the $103 version. However, you need to add $16 6V battery because it's not included.

Whatever you buy, try to get a metal barrel feeder. I bought a cheapy Remington Metal Barrel kit from Academy when they went on sale. Worked for several years. When the motor that came with it crapped out, put a good unit on and everything still works fine. Good luck. I stay away anything that says Moultrie. I had too many problems but some people love them.

I agree but neither you or I are buying this man a feeder. He is spending the funds he has to by a feeder.

Im 32 years old. I have several crank up feeders that my grandfather and dad and uncle built years before I was born that are still in operation. Sure every 15 or 25 years one might need a new pulley or cable or winch etc. but they have been great. I wonder if my papa thought i'd be hunting one of his feeders all those years ago? I get a smile when I think of him, he went way to young.

Cheap feeders are more expensive in the long run. TRUST ME!!!

If I couldn't afford a good feeder I would just save until I could. You will spend as much in 2 seasons on cheap crap than what you could have bought a 20+ year feeder for to begin with. And sitting in the stand waiting for cheap crap to sling corn (only to find out it wont) is worse than buying the cheap crap in the first place.

Seriously...…..I would spread corn by hand before I would buy a cheap feeder. You might as well just set your money on fire.

I definitely wouldn't use cheap feeder legs that section together. I would find some Moultrie feeder leg brackets (I don't think you can get them without the leg kit though) that bolt to your drum and then I would go to Home Depot or Lowes and get three 1.5" conduit 8-10 feet for your legs.

I have had good luck with the older Moultrie feeder units that had the built in cage (not their cheapest version). I would have bought another one but they redesigned it to twist lock into a bracket. I ended up buying a Game Winner unit for one feeder and mounting to a 55 gallon drum with no issues so far.

Oh and get a galvanized feeder lid!!! If you do try and use the barrel lid make sure to remove the rubber gasket so you aren't trapping condensation in the barrel causing mold. Also stay away from the black molded feeder lids as these will heat up and then cool down in the evenings creating condensation and resulting in mold.

Now that you have received a ton of advice buy or build the best you can.

I think by now you see a trend. I will say there's lot of knowledge here and they are right. In short take your time do it right and it will last a very long time, I have two that were my first (winch) builds that are still operating nearly 15 years later. Same barrels timers and so on, I have had to replace the batteries a few times. Get a "good" timer, box, and barrel. Remember Metal is better than Plastic. These folks are more than willing to help.
