Sunglasses?

Sunglasses? - 06/08/19 03:05 PM

Looking to buy some good sunglasses before vacation. I've been shopping online. I have a few pairs of cheap ones, but looking to buy something better.
Looking at Oakley, Costa, and Wiley X.
I like to buy U.S. made any time possible.
Have read that the Wiley X scratch easily, but the military use them.

Anyone have any experience and opinions on these or other quality brands?

I have had great luck with my Costas, Love them. I can find the online much cheaper than stores. Just ordered another pair today Casta Tuna Alleys in 580G
I prefer the glass over the plastics

I have oakleys and Wiley x's
One pair of oakleys are 14 years old third pair of lenses I think
All the others are still on their first if you use something soft to clean the lenses they last a while

I still like Costa. I have worn them for years, and got my first pair in Florida when it was rare to see them around here. I also have had excellent luck with Maui Jim’s, either are great.

Oakley is now a foreign brand, owned by Luxottica out of Milan, Italy. Costa is owned by a French company called Essilor that has merged with Luxottica.

Wiley X is still American owned and operated.

I have a pair of Costa’s and a pair of Revo’s. Replaced the lenses on the Revo’s recently with a pair from Revant Optics.

I prefer my Costa’s over my Revo’s

I really love the feel and lens quality of Maui Jim. That being said.... I have 4 pairs of Kahuna's needing sent in due to the lenses delaminating for some reason. I don't think they like salt water, maybe? I dunno'

I buy my sunglasses at Home depot for $7 and they keep the sun out of my eyes just like the expensive ones.

Maui Jim if you want some of the best polarized glasses.

Re: Sunglasses? - 06/18/19 02:34 PM

Nothing on the market beats Costa's 580 technology. The 580 glass gives you the best light transmission and most scratch resistance. 580P's (plastic) is lighter and a little less light transmission, but still good. I think the company has been sold twice and the frames are now farmed out to China and SUCK! Lens and technology is still retained in USA and assembled into the frames here. Not a big fan of the quality of the frames now, but like I said nothing beats the 580 technology, so I keep buying them. Just recently bought some 580G's in blue mirror in Slack Tide frames for an upcoming trip to the beach.

My good ones are Maui Jim with glass lenses, I have had to replace the lenses due to dropping them and the new lenses are cracked on the corner from sitting on them but the glass is crisp and clear. I have Wiley X and Foster Grant and Pan Optix and Oakleys for daily kicking around. Those plastic lenses are all about the same,
Most of the decent glasses are all made in one factory in Italy now with different names and designs put on them.

Re: Sunglasses? - 06/20/19 01:22 PM

Maui Jim’s wasn’t on your list but as this thread proves they’re worth looking at. I haven’t found better glass and their frames are very durable. Made in Italy like most of the good ones. I broke a pair yesterday that I had for over 3 years. 100% my fault. I cracked the lens. Prior to yesterday they did not have a single scratch on them. Unlike many on this thread I do not have several pair of sunglasses to meet various needs, I have one pair that can do everything except be fashionable in every situation. I use them in the lake, driving, mowing, weedeating, and running the chainsaw. Plus any other task at hand. Some of them run $4-500 but most are in the $2-300 range.

I may be overselling them but that’s my take on them. Headed to pick up a new pair today and will keep the old ones for doing stupid stuff.

Whatever you buy get glass lenses. They all look good new, the glass will look good old.

I had several pair of Maui Jim's, I don't have a single pair now. I do have close to 20 pair of Costa, most with the glass lenses. I have probably 8 pair of Straits alone in various frame colors/camo and several lense colors. I have not had any issues with the frames and I wear them every day.

Re: Sunglasses? - 06/23/19 01:03 PM

I wear the classic Ray Ban Aviators, with polarized lenses, but they're Italian made. The polarized models have a P after Ray Ban, you can find the regular sized Aviators w/ polarized lenses at on line discount outlets, but almost no one has the oversized. I like bronze lenses for general purpose wear.

Nobody has mentioned them yet, so I will, but take a look at Smiths (https://www.smithoptics.com/us/). Their ChromaPop lens have great clarity and let in a lot of natural color. I have two pairs that I use for fishing and they are extremely comfortable as well.

I have lots of Oakleys but prefer and wear Maui Jims. Costas are my back-up on the water

Re: Sunglasses? - 07/17/19 02:58 PM

I wore Oakley's for 20+ years and have switched over to Costa's (both glass and plastic lenses) in the last year. I LOVE THE COSTA's! Especially the quality with the glass lenses. Lot's of deals on them on the web (Amazon, Sierra Trading...).

Re: Sunglasses? - 07/27/19 04:07 AM

Smth is the highest quality most overlooked specs in my opinion.

Maui's = Noticable sharpest lens clarity of all the high end mfg's but glass is impossible to keep clean. Absolute oil, print, smudge magnets. Won't buy again. The Ferarri.... Very nice but not a daily driver....the ones I have are useless outside of being "driving glasses" to and from work.....

Costa's = Can't lose here...

Smith. = Very impressive in all aspects.....I easily put them on par with Costa's....lens technology is alpha level and the frames are high quality.....and every other jackwad doesn't have a pair.....

This is a little off subject but I hate it when I head to the deer stand for an evening hunt and realize I wore my prescription sunglasses. It always seems to get dark much earlier when I do.

No they're not equivalent to $200 dollar Costas but for 60 bucks (with free accident replacement) they're pretty good. I had some Oakleys and some Raybans in the past. The Oakleys had great durability in their lenses but their plastic frames were garbage. The RayBans (Aviators) were great. I had them for years, until I dropped them accidentally. I'd go for another high end pair but with the quality of the ShadyRays being as good as it is I'm not in any rush.
