Best cleaning kit - 308 bolt action

New to this forum. Bought a 308 bolt action over the summer(first rifle). I was going to take it out to the range to get it ready for hunting but read that you have to properly clean and break in your rifle. I wanted to get people's advise on what kit they've purchase that will do the job. No price range. I rather spend some $$$ than ruin my rifle

if you have a decent rod that's straight
with the correct jag and some good patches
that's most of what you need.
jmho , i think most folks overclean their
rifles. do what you need to do to get any
protective oil or grease from the bore, and
"break it in " by putting ammo through it.
a dry patch ever so often, and a lightly oiled
patch through before any extended storage
will do nicely. run some clean dry patches
through to remove any oil from storage, and
fire a few to foul and check zero with and
you're ready to go again. good luck

I would start by getting a one-piece cleaning rod long enough to run through the entire length of your rifle barrel. Those three-piece rods are prone to scratch barrels when the joints flex and don't line up perfectly. I've seen good ones at Walmart for not too much. I would also suggest going to Walmart and picking up a shoe box sized plastic container for keeping all your cleaning solvents, oil, patches, and other items. You can also find small, plastic containers for keeping your cleaning rod tips, brushes, and other small stuff you will need to do the job.

As for breaking in a barrel, opinions differ. I'm a strong believer in it myself. Just search the web and you'll find plenty of info on it. It really involves nothing more than firing a a brief series of shots and cleaning after each series for a few times to remove slight imperfections that result from production processes. In a sense, it's much like breaking in a new engine to ensure the rod bearings "bed" smoothly with the crank shaft.

Keep in mind that some guys hardly ever clean their barrels, while others are quite religious about it. I fall into the later group. Just can't see paying so much for a firearm to keep stored away dirty. As they say, treat it like it's the last one you'll ever own.

I'd add to make sure you have a bore guide as well.

Good point. However, that can be a challenge when you consider all the different brands of cleaning products. Hoppes and Outers are probably the two most common when it comes to cleaners and solvents. But there are also makers of rods and other cleaning accessories who don't make solvents.

Also, some guys can be as particular about their gun cleaners and oils as they are about their choice of beer.
