Cannon vs. Winchester Gun Safe?

Hello hunters, I am debating between a Cannon and Winchster gun safe. I tend to like the Winchester better, but the Cannon's warranty seems to be a little less hassle free. Does anyone have any experience with either of these two brand gun safes, and if so which do you recommend? Thanks

I looked at those and wound up buying a Champion Safe.

Someone on the THF here posted about Cannon a month or so back. He had a housefire and his safe kept everything perfectly safe, even the paper. When he told Cannon about it, they sent him a brand new safe to replace the one that was in the fire. I was impressed by his story. When I get one, I am getting a Cannon for sure.

The Winchesters are made by Granite (at least they were when I bought mine several years ago).

Mine has the digital key pad and I had problems with it right from the start. It would drain a battery in just a couple of weeks. After this happend a few times I took the key pad off the door and found a wire that had some of the insulation missing. I called Granite and without any problems at all they sent me a brand new key pad. Instalation was as simple as just unpluging the old one and pluging in the new one. Didnt even have to reset the combo.

I dont really hold that problem against them because there will always be defects that will slip through the cracks no matter how good your quality control is. Its how they handle those issues that I will judge them by and they pass with flying colors.

If I were going to buy another safe I wouldnt buy the digital key pad. I would buy the dial type lock. But they do stand behind thier product so I give them 2 thumbs up.

I have the Winchester and it has been trouble free. I almost bought a Cannon when Costco had them on sale a few months ago. I would go for whichever I could get the better deal on. My firearms reproduced when I bought a safe. The 24 gun safe is not big enough. I will echo others when they say buy bigger than you need.

I have had a Browning Gold series for several years and when I needed another one I couldn't really afford another top of the line Browning, so I started researching other brands. I looked at a lot, including the Cannon and Winchester. In fact, a friend of mine bought a Cannon but I decided on the Winchester Silverado. After comparing those two, I think the Winchester is of higher quality. I also have the dial type locks on both of my safes as I have heard of too many problems with electronic type locks. I have been very happy with mine and would buy another Winchester Silverado if I had a place to put it.

I have both. But you really cant compare the 2 without knowing the model. There is a big difference in the low end cannon and the high end. Actually my Winchester safe is made by Liberty so i dunno if that helps.

I think it depends entirely on what your getting the safe for.

If you are concerned about fire, then that statistic (fire rating) is all that counts; more than space or price.

If you are buying it to keep from being robbed then you want to look at weight because they are likely equally hard/easy to break into in a given period of time spent by a thief at your home.

If you are looking to keep your kids out of your guns, then buy either, look at space, price and features like usb and power. personally, I decided that I am this type of buyer and would go with the Cannon in most cases.

I think I could cut the top off any gun safe that I have looked at with a sawsall in under 5 minutes. When you measure the metal thickness in a numbered guage they will be easy to get into (like 10 guage). Might be OK for fire, I dont know...

I have a small Cannon and have never had a problem with it...We built a couple from plate homemade and they were about 4 times heavier and were a pain to build and install...If I had a lot of
money and a large place, I'd condsider building a vault w/a reinforced concrete wall, floor, and ceiling and a vault safe door....But then you are talking big bucks..Even giving my buds
the labor on the ones we built..the costs more than the new Comm.

I have a Champion. I got the dial lock because I didn't want to worry about batteries or electric components. It has some type of warranty if damaged by attempted break-in or fire.

Most safes have a fire rating (hours at x°). Be sure that is adequate for where you put it.

As thegrouse said, the most difficult thing to control with a safe is firearm reproduction. Be sure you get one twice as big as you think you need.

Winchester they have a office in ft worth and are very helpful when you call them cannon are not in Texas and they won't even answer the phone.

I will second what Koenig said, it is all about what you are looking for in the safe and the specifics of the safe you are looking at. I was about to pull the trigger on a Cannon safe from Costco, until i read the specs and found it was their bottom end safe with low fire resistance and low weight. I ended up picking up a mid range Liberty safe from Cabelas, and have been very happy with it.

You can get a very reliable safe (i.e. for just keeping kids away from guns) from any of these manufacturers on the cheap. It is the other stuff (fire board thickness, guage steel, type of lock, number and location of bolts in door, etc) which make a safe what you need it to be...

A lot more into it than just asking which manufacturer is better...

I've got a cannon,It's a 28 gun safe,never a problem one,I like the warranty better,I wish i had bought the big one now.I want another one just like this one,or i will buy the bigger one when my son get's through with his house and give him this one.

Cannon- just because it's a great name...

On the flipside, a good friend of mine had a housefire several months ago and lost every gun in his safe except for one. It was a 48 gun Cannon from TSC. They are replacing the safe, but he's SOL on the guns. FWIW, I bought a Steelwater that is rated @ 1875 for 60 min. vs. the 1200 for 30 min. of the Cannon. A local guy who sells AMSECS and Liberty's was pretty impressed with it.

I have a Winchester and love it. Had it a couple of months. The only bad thing I will say is like most safes, it won't hold as many as they say. It might f they were all 10-22's or .410 single barrels.

Biometrics can fail on you, especially on a cheap box. Don't need that hassle in an emergency or in the dark.
This is what I have and it will hold two pistols. Bolt it to a drawer in your nightstand. I can open it in total darkness.

My newer Cannon safe is ok, but it absolutely eats the 9 volt batteries that operate the electronic key pad.

My old Winchester safe has been great, with zero issues at all, and the key pad batteries last for years.
