45 Colt reloads, 325 hr hard cast

45 Colt reloads, 325 hr hard cast - 06/11/21 10:06 PM

So, I have the dies now, and powder (231, Unique, universal). I’ll pull the bullets in the factory +P ammo and was planning to reload them with a mild powder charge and the original bullets. The pistol in question is a new production Colt reproduction SAA. None of my reloading books even address loads in a SAA with a 325 gr bullet. I’m thinking maybe I should just get some 200 gr bullets and go with them in a mild load.

Any of you guys load a pumpkin ball bullet that big in a SAA type revolver? Is it safe in a non-Ruger? I have concerns, and not loading diddly till I get a comfortable idea on loads.

For all my SAA colts/clones, I use Trail Boss Powder.

Doesn't matter the bullet weight, so long as your powder charge IS NOT COMPRESSED. In otherwords max load is filling the case to the BASE OF THE BULLET (WHEN SEATED). (This is max load, 70% of that is your starting load)

I find trail boss Nice to shoot out of my trapper 92 and my SAA's (Clones)

255g is the standard load for that gun. Or at least the SAA as designed originally. I bet some show up.

603 Country, what manuals have you looked at? For the powders you have.
Alliant manual that I have 2012 says 250 grain behind 7.8 g of Unique 941 FPS
Hornady calls for 250 grain behind 6.2 to7.1 g of Unique
Hornady 250 grain behind 6.1 to 7.3g 231
Hornady 250 grain behind 6.5 to 8.2g Universal
Lyman says 250 grain behind 6.0 to 9.0g Unique

Not seeing anything above 250-255, so you might have to go shopping. My manuals are old like me so take that in account.

I load 8grs of unique with 255’s, and 200 rnfp hard cast both are easy to shoot.
I have shot as little at 6 grains of unique and it’s a pleasure to shoot very accurate as well I have ran both loads and bullets through a uberti like what you have described with no issues

Sure, I have plenty data in multiple manuals for 250 gr bullets. Note that I’m talking about 325 gr bullets. With 75 gr more than the 250, I can’t even begin to use guesswork for a starter load.

And thank goodness my neighbor didn’t try to shoot any of the 325 gr +P factory ammo in his SAA repro.

I'd be real cautious with any hot loads in anything other than a Ruger.

Thanks. I think I can work with that 300 gr bullet load. Probably will just wait to get some lighter bullets though.

Those big cases yearn for a thermonuclear charge of powder don't they.
You don't need no stinkin' Casull.

From the voice of experience. Don't do it!
