7-08AI Die recommendations

7-08AI Die recommendations - 02/06/20 08:42 PM

As the title suggests, I'm looking to see what die set I should order for 7-08AI.

Seems like one I have seen a few times on sale is:

Redding Type S Bushing 3-Die Neck Sizer Set 7mm-08 RemAckImp

Anyone have any experience with that set? Or suggestions for what else to look for?

I've got a new 7-08AI barrel on a nice little Rem700 set up (thanks again, JG!!!) and looking to start fireforming some brass for the 7-08AI reloading, soon.

I thought you already asked me this. And I thought I already told you, you'll probably habe to special order the Redding set. I ordered it, and it wasn't a terribly long wait, maybe 2 to 3 weeks, if memory serves.

Hard to beat Redding dies for reloading without spending a lot more $

Excellent. Thanks! Yes, I thought this was the one you mentioned but wasn’t sure. I saw two versions and got confused. Ordering tomorrow. Thanks!

You don't need 3 dies.

Maybe I ordered the full length "Type S" bushing sizing die, as well as the seater die. You can make a FL die into a "neck only" die, but not the other way around. All I use, including A.I. cartridges, is two dies. Sorry I didn't mention that earlier.

I wasn't going to stick my nose in your bitness SOB cause I ain't no authority but Jason's right. That 3rd die probably won't get much use but in case you decide to neck size only, you can. I won't, too risky and virtually no reward.

Depends on the particular set. Some offer a body die separate for bumping the shoulder and the nk die is separate. Yea it adds a step kinda but still works.

I dang sure don't buy those. See them available, but don't buy them. I don't need to further complicate things and add steps. You, and Judd, and Chad all recommended neck sizing only first fired A.I. brass. That can be done with a FL die properly set to do so (I know you know that). Next go-round, I'll set the exact same die to push the shoulder back .001"+

Sure enough, I had a few neck sized brass hard to chamber. I just muscled the bolt handle closed and fired them anyway. Dangit! Catch 22

I found a new set of the - Redding Type S Bushing 3-Die Neck Sizer Set 7mm-08 RemAckImp - for $122/shipped on eBay. It seemed like a Good deal, compared to the two die set Redding had, that was much more. But honestly, I’m not sure if I got the right set up for my needs. I’m okay if a die doesn’t get used and the set was cheaper. But if I need to go with a different set up that will be better overall, I have no issues returning this set.

Here’s the description of the set I got:

Redding Type S Bushing Neck Sizer Die Sets include a Type S Neck Sizing Die, Body Die and Bullet Seater Die. The sizing die precisely resizes case necks, using an interchangeable bushing. The Body die is designed to full length resize the case body only and bump the shoulder position for proper chambering without disturbing the case neck. The adjustable decapping rod allows positioning of the bushing to resize only a portion of the neck length if desired. The seating die seats and crimps the bullet. Shellholder and Bushing sold separately.

My understanding of those is you're going to end up with two steps of sizing brass. One step to size the body, and a second die to address the neck. Ain't nobody got time for that.

If that's not how it works, I apologize. But reading it for myself years ago, made me avoid them.

Cool. I asked to cancel the sale. I just need to buy the right ones. Think I got ahead of myself a tad.

Thanks for the info everyone.

That's the set I have. It doesn't bother me nk sizing then having to run the body die too.

Re: 7-08AI Die recommendations - 02/07/20 03:46 PM

I read good things about the set, but I think I'd still prefer the 2 step process.

I contacted Redding. They do not sell these direct. They referred me to a Redding dealer. After speaking with Jason, I’m trying to hunt down who has the "Type S Match Grade bushing full length sizing die”. Most places have the seated die ready to go.

Just stick to 7mm brass with those. If you plan to run something like lapua 308 it'll likely cause excessive nk tension.

up

I’ll be sticking to 7mm. Have a lot of Hornady 7-08 ammo that I will fire form and then just use that brass. That’s the plan anyhow.

SOB, once you get it all formed, anneal necks occasionally or have it done to preserve brass life and maintain tension. Once formed, it's all down hill, enjoy.

👍👍👍 will do! And thanks! I’m looking forward to this reloading journey. Once the powder measurer/scale arrives (hopefully next week), I’ll be ready to roll! I’ve been saving brass for the last 4 years, so I have been tumbling/depriming a lot the last couple weeks. I’ve just been getting everything lined up! clap
