6.5 SAUM, 6.5 PRC bullet if I ever saw one.

Maybe I need to dust off the 6.5x55 in the back of the safe.

While not as fast as the big boys my magazine and chamber will let me set that bullet way out there. I canít get anywhere near the lands with the 140 Amax. From the article linked above I can see 2750+ in the Swede pretty easy.

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 07/01/19 01:20 AM

Do yall have the twist to stabilize it?

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 07/01/19 01:34 AM

1:8 on my Tikka. During the test article above that stabilized it in the creedmoor. I think it would be marginal if I canít get the velocity up. Itís worth me burning a box of bullets for giggles to find out.

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 07/01/19 02:19 AM

I have a 1:8 in my Ruger so it should work.

Same here. My Tikka Swede has a very long throat would be interesting how these perform! Now if only I could find some RL26 to see how fast they can be pushed?

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 07/13/19 08:19 PM

Thus far, the BC is matching the Hornady 147 gr ELD-M

But they will come out slower, in the same cartridge...

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 07/19/19 02:39 AM

Shooting these in a creed. Shot 4 groups of 3 at 300 yards. 40.3 gave me 2586. My coal is 2.88 at .02 off the lands. Hoping to get between 2725 and 2750. I have loaded from 40.6 to 42.4 in .2 grain increments.

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 07/19/19 02:54 AM

You'll never safely get that velocity out of a 6.5 Creedmoor.

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 07/19/19 03:12 AM

Iíll find out. Guys are running the 147 over 2800 FPS. Although it is heavier, the 156 has a shorter bearing surface. Most are stating that the 156 is running about FPS slower than the 147.

24 inch barrel

I plan to shoot a 300 yard ladder with a magneto speed.

Good choice for .264Win mag

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 07/19/19 05:22 PM

I have loaded 156gr Oryx Normaís in two 6.5 Creedmoor and speeds were at the 2700 mark.
There are a couple of powders that will get you there.... H 4350 probably not safely.

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 07/19/19 08:26 PM

Iím now thinking not either. I will run the ladder and stop when I see pressure.

The 2536 load shot a .6 MOA. I reloaded that as well to see how it groups at 700 yards.

Thank you both for the safety advice.

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 07/21/19 04:31 AM

Shot H4350 in .2 increments

Last 3 shots had speeds of
2682
2721
2706

No heavy bolt. Primers look round and no ejector marks. I might slip into an indoor range and continue to look for max.

Dstroud,

I looked at the 156 Norma oryx. It look to be all bearing surface from the ogive back. You think these might get me more speed compared to that bullet.

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 07/21/19 02:43 PM

Look for max in this heat. This is the best time of year for load development.

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 07/21/19 03:02 PM

They do have longer bearing surface maybe why they shoot so good. Thatís good news if I can get around 3000 with the Berger in the PRC and 6.5 SAUM that would be pretty nice hunting round

I agree with David and Jason. Wish this was available when I had my 6.5 Weatherby. Sure is fun exploring though

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 07/28/19 01:20 AM

Ran the 156 to 2769 and saw the first signs of pressure. Primer looked good and bolt lift was fine, but saw ejector marks. Temp was around 90 degrees today. This was with h4350.

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 07/28/19 03:41 AM

I ran my first few 156 Bergerís today. They shot good!
6.5 PRC 58.3 gr Retumbo @2943 fps average ES 7
Below last 3 shots on steel at 654 yds... the 334 yard group was great but forgot to stop and take picture.
No excessive pressure signs but I will probably be happy there.

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 08/05/19 02:45 PM

These are shooting at 2720 FPS at .6 MOA. Shot groups at 300, 500 and 700.

Last round was a hit at 1100 yards. Thatís max at the range. Only loaded 10 rounds.

H4350, 84 degrees, 600 ft,

Funny thing. The load is the exact load in running the 143 eldx. These are 18 FPS slower.

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 08/05/19 05:29 PM

That is the same speed I got with the 156gr Oryx bullet in the 6.5 Creedmoor but used Reloder 16.

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 08/05/19 05:59 PM

DStroud,

I believe you had some of the 180 eldm come apart in your 28 nosler. How many grooves was the barrel? There is a theory of 3 and 4 groove barrel, high speed and high twist going around?
Posted By: DStroud

Re: Bergerís 6.5 156 Release - 08/05/19 07:42 PM

Mine is a 4 groove Benchmark barrel.
I did have two come apart on same day under same circumstance. Both times it was 3rd shot of 3 shot string which is the most I shoot without a long cooling. Load was running around 3200fps
At the time my barrel had about 200 rounds down it. Now its close to 350 and starting to see firecracking get more noticeable.

I just found a thread you might find interesting. 3&4 groove barrel

Re: BergerÔŅĹs 6.5 156 Release - 08/10/19 11:27 PM

You would have to really be shooting far to make these better than the 143 or 147s. Even the 130-135 don't give up anything to them out to around 500yd except a little energy. This is running numbers for a SAUM. Should buck the wind enough to give 1" advantage over 130s at 500 and drop 4" more. Stretch to 1000yd and its a lot different in the wind but I use mine to hunt anyway so 1k is out of the question on that no matter the bullet. I think 135gr JLK and 143ELDx will get getting my business for now.

Re: BergerÔŅĹs 6.5 156 Release - 08/11/19 12:31 PM

I agree they don’t give a big jump in BC performance which may have been intentional as they show to be stable in the normal 1/8 twist barrel. Compared to the Sierra 150gr which shows optimal to be 1/7.5.
I plan to try them on game as there are deer hunts that turn into Elk/ Aoudad hunts and the extra thump they offer may come in handy.
I have used the 135 gr Classic with great success so that’s not a bad way to go and I may end right back there.

The 143 seems to be a solid performer but not sold on the 147 as of yet... seems from others I know who tried them they have had inconsistent results but I have not shot enough animals with them to say one way or another.

I haven’t used the 147 personally but I have the 143 loaded up and they have performed perfectly. Took my sheep last year at 515yd and the bullet did great

Re: BergerÔŅĹs 6.5 156 Release - 08/26/19 03:39 PM

Tried H4831sc with this round. Was able to again run to 2777 but zero pressure. In my rifle, I don’t think I can get enough powder in the case to reach over pressure. This was a compressed load. This appeared to have a wider node for me. An .6 grain spread averaged 2724 with an ES of 4. Loaded in .2 grain increments

Re: BergerÔŅĹs 6.5 156 Release - 08/26/19 03:52 PM

What brass are you running? Primer pockets will let you know if pressure is excessive. The SRP brass helps when running max+ as it will hang in there longer.

Re: BergerÔŅĹs 6.5 156 Release - 08/26/19 08:49 PM

Using Hornady brass. I plan to shoot again tomorrow. I might clean those and check the pockets. Thanks

Nice Chad!!
My 22 inch 6.5 PRC is running 2939 average with the 156 EOL and shooting well. Those should sell as they run good with 1/8 twist and should hit with authority way on out there if needed.

Re: BergerÔŅĹs 6.5 156 Release - 08/27/19 02:52 AM

Correct, most PRC shooters who are running the 156 Berger's or 153 A-Tip's have a long magazine to accommodate the longer COAL of the round. These run right at ~3.0" long.

Mine are loaded at 3.050 @.012 off lands and it’s a LA.
