muzzle velocity?? - 06/03/19 07:44 PM

hornady lists 2750 fps from a 24 inch barrel for their eld X in 30-06

My barrel is 21.25 inches long

I am trying to get as accurate as possible of a muzzle velocity for a custom ballistic turret.

Can you gurus give me your best guess including 2.75 inches less on the barrel and what the manufacturer will be off in saying 2750

My best guess is 2625 to 2650 but some of you guys are much more informed than me

thanks for your help

Manufacturer-listed velocities are not always accurate. If you are going so far as to order a custom turret, I would recommend you actually measure your own velocity under appropriate conditions.

We don't know the factory muzzle velocity. I've seen as high a 300 fps variation from what's on the box. Some of the 6.5 CM Hornady black and Prec Hunter ammo chrono'd at 2540 and 2560 fps with 2700 fps written on the box. So, no telling what the actual velocity is until you chrono it. With a 30-06, you fps loss will be right at 20-25 fps per inch. So, 2.75" barrel loss should equal about 65-70 fps from a 24" barrel, roughly. But it all stems from what the factory ammo truly is. I wouldn't base a ballistic turret on a guess.

Also, the weak link in your system will now be the "custom turret". System meaning your rifle, scope, ammo and shooter. With a "custom turret" it locks you into a set come up programmed in an exact environmental condition. I'd recommend learning moa or mils to avoid that set up. I can go on about various problems customers have had in the past with "custom turrets"

I have been warned about the inaccuracy of a custom turret. As you can see by fireman 's response he is one of the persons telling me dont do it. However they can be easily put on and taken off in a matter of seconds. SO it isnt like it is permanent and free is free. No harm done except maybe a couple of bullets at the range to see if it will hit the 200 yard target dead on

From what I have read and what you just stated off the shelf ammo is rarely what they say it is. From what I remember reading typically and in almost all cases it is slower than what is stated. If every round is different then there is no need to chrono because bullets will be different from box to box.

Now my best guess is 2650 - 70 = 2580

Believe me the shooter is the weakest link not the turret.

The turret will be on if only going to 200 yards. Even with some velocity variation, you will be fine. But the longer ranges is where you will see the issues. I'd put in 2550 fps and call it good.

Since the scope comes with a 1/4 MOA turret, why not buy all the ammo you will ever need, and go shoot it at various ranges, document your findings in MOA, then give that data to Leupold for your turret.

If the day comes you change lot numbers, your turret is now incorrect.

If you shoot in a much different environment, there will be a distance your turret values are wrong.

I just don't see the draw for a custom turret. Especially one for mass produced ammo! A Mil or MOA turret works on everything from .22 lr to field artillery.

As has been pointed out, MOA/MIL turrets are much more versatile than custom turrets (I have all of the above), BUT that doesn't mean a custom turret won't work, and work very well, once your ballistics are verified by actually shooting it, with a chrono. Don't guess, or it's an absolute waste of time.

Slight and subtle changes in elevations and temps don't affect the custom turrets as much as you'd think anyway, and even if you experience extreme changes you can go to customturretsystems.com and order a new custom label that will stick right over the custom turret. It works perfectly, and they are tough.
