Tikka 243 bullet options

Tikka 243 bullet options - 05/05/18 01:11 PM

I bought a tikka t3 lite chambered in 243 win with a 1:10 TR a while back and I’m just now getting around to working up some loads for it now that I’ve burned through some factory ammo and have some brass to work with. I’m mostly looking to have some fun with it out to 500 yds on steel until I gather the funds to rebarrel it. What bullets should I start with?

you might get one of the new 100 grain bullets to work but probably one in the 80gr range.

Great information thank you sir! I’m leaning towards 87gr VMax with IMR 4064

Man, I'm as a big a Hornady lover as anyone, but Sierra still deserves a look. So I looked, check out the BC they achieved for a 95 gr 6mm. And my experience with their .30 cal 155 TMK has been nothing but positive. The BC has been correct, it's great for target, and has done a number on hogs and coyotes. You mentioned 500 yard target, this bullet will go twice that far, no doubt about it.

I like the 95gr TMK but do you think my barrel will stabilize it?

Might try some 4000MR powder

The twist rate charts say it will. And I would expect a full case of powder to do it best. In other words, there is usually a low powder charge and a high powder charge that works in everything. I would plan on focusing on the high one here, which is what we all do most of the time anyway.

1:10 twist should stabilize that 95 fine. Some are even able to get 105’s etc to stabilize.

I debate often about rebarreling my 243 to a fast twist 243 or a 7mm08 ai

I was thinking IMR-4451, the new replacement for H-4350, which was also a known great powder for .243 Win.

Alright I have some 95gr TMKs on the way and I’m going to swing by Gibson’s Monday to look for some powder. Until then I guess I’ll start looking for some load data.

When I do rebarrel I believe I’m going to go to a fast twist 243ai

That's the baddest dude to walk the block, in that action and bolt size.
