Savage 111 284win ?? - 10/10/17 03:53 PM

A buddy of mine inherited an older Savage 111 .284win a few years back and has shot up all the ammo he had. He's asked me to reload for him since he cant find any off the shelf.

Anyone know what twist he's got? Not sure if I'm just looking in the wrong place or what, but I cant seem to find it. He's mainly wanting it as a back-up hunting rifle since its an heirloom, but I'm not sure where to start on bullet selection. I'm only ever loaded some sierra's for my 22-250 and the 180 vlds for my 7wsm, so that's the extent to my bullet knowledge on performance.

Why make things harder than they need to be? Use a quality middle of the road 140-150 grain .284 hunting bullet at a reasonable velocity and be done with it.

Standard for the old Winchesters was a 1:10 twist rate. more optimized for 140 to 150gr bullets. Fitting them in a short action I think had something to do with that selection

back whrn it came out the 175gr selection was a round nose bullet or semi pointed so not as long as today's high sleek BC bullets.

Thanks kmon. I wasn't sure if savage was slow twist for the light bullets, or slightly faster. Wasn't trying to overthink this whole thing, but I'm also not wanting to throw a whole lot of time into reloading for something that 1. isn't mine and 2. something that 100 bullets will probably last him 5-6 years on.

If he is just using it on deer I would probably load it up with 139gr ELD-X, 140 Ballistic tips or Accubonds and he is covered for any deer walking within normal shooting ranges.

The 139gr Hornady interlock and SST as well as the 140gr BT, partitions and Accubonds have been working well for me in a 7mm-08 for 35 years so figure they should work for him in a 284

Back when the day the 175gr with a "point" I remember is a partition.

OP, take the bolt out of your rifle. Starting at the breech, run your cleaning rod through the barrel and out the muzzle. Screw a .284 brush on the rod and pull it into the barrel and stop. Clamp a cloths pin on the rod where it exits the action so it is touching the action and indexed straight up. Pull the rod back till the clothes pin makes one revolution and is again indexed straight up. Measure from the action to the clothes pin in inches. That is your twist.
