Cheap to Feed 25-06 - 09/15/16 11:37 PM

My 25-06 has always shot Winchester 120 grain PEP's, and other inexpensive factory loads with cup and core bullets very well. I've been getting ready for a Pronghorn hunt and decided to go fancy. I loaded up some Nosler Ballistic Tips and my rifle was not having any. Then I loaded up some Hornady SST's and it didn't do any better. Hornady's are secant ogive, but the Noslers are tangent, so that doesn't seem to make a difference. I have no explanation for this, but I wish I knew why it wouldn't shoot these bullets better. It's not a big deal I suppose but it's more curiosity than anything else.

I've always said that rifles have personalities. Some just like certain loads and bullets. Have you tried any Berger Hunting VLDs?

If you're not using a suitable powder, and in the right amount, then you'll have problems. If BTs and SSTs won't shoot at all, then there's something wrong with the rifle. But, you've indicated there is nothing at all wrong with the rifle as evidenced by its demonstrated appetite for certain inexpensive factory ammo. In other words, the recipes you were using are most likely to blame.

Just curious what the twist is on your barrel?
I have just started loading 25-06 in my Savage Axis and it really likes the 90 Gr HP Sierras and 53 Gr of 4350
I know that probably doesn't help you with your problem, but I am very interested in your progress and results.

Try some IMR4350. Always been a reliable powder for me inthe 25/06. Sierra 117gr bullets usually work well, too.
