South Texas Bow Hunting Stands

What do you guys use to Bow Hunt South Texas? Ground blinds? Tripods?
I’ve rifle hunted there for 35 years out of box blinds and tripods, going after them this year with my new Halon 32 6. I have a couple tripods set up but not happy with the cover. I also have a double Bull blind I could use. I thought about making a natural ground blind but not too excited about the rattle monsters joining me.

I use all 3 (tripod, popup, natural brush blind) and it just depends on my hunting set up location as to the best blind fit for the cover in that particular area. I've had tremendous luck taking a tripod (only using upper section about 5-6' tall (don't use the other leg sections) and finding one of those big around cedar bushes and sticking that tripod right up and over into the center of it and just trim very little for shooting. Have had many deer surround me within 3-5 feet. This has worked better than popup or brush blind for natural concealment, stays green and the cedar helps with scent. Of course, still hunt the right wind.

I like the idea of not using the bottom legs, I don’t have cedar but that still should work well. Thanks

It all depends on the area which you are hunting. I use tripods from 6' tall to 12' tall. I have pop-up ground blinds and tree stands built with 2x4's. I also use ladder stands. Just depends on the size of the trees, brush and terrain.

Not much over 10’ tall there. Lots of mesquite black brush and sage.

Have you tried box blinds with archery windows?

I have box blinds I guess I could set up a feeder on the side with the door.

Get a pop up and brush it in to where you can't really tell it is there. This has been highly effective for me

pop ups are ok for short term, but if you think you're going to bow hunt every year then a box blind with dark interior paint and archery cut outs (+- 4"x 12") is much better. The deer will get used to the blind being close to the feeder.

Put you a popup on top of a platform. By far the best S Tex hunting setup I've used (or anywhere really). Just have to find a good oak/mesquite tree for a backdrop or build the stand only a couple feet tall so you're not above the brush line. A couple feet off the ground in S Tex makes all the difference in the world.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I think it’s time to build an archery box blind. I’m going to carry my double bull blind down for the time being.

One more suggestion for you bdog....Make the least number of cut outs you can, or have a solid cover for each of them to prevent light penetration. Some hunters have a need to see in all directions, but if you can stand it, just 1 cut out and a dark interior offers the most concealment. Good luck!
