Micro diameter arrows - 09/20/17 12:57 AM

When I got my Halon i got suckered into buying gold tip pierce arrows. Micro diameter new arrows. Flimsy looking as all get out. So tiny they have to put a weighted collar over the front where you screw in the broadhead or field point.

Supposedly they are some kind of deep penetrating and wind resistant arrow

Shot them a my block target, with a 390 grain total arrow weight they shoot almost all the way thru it.

They may be on to something if you are hunting large game

The Goldtip pierce are new but carbon micro diameter arrow are not. GT is getting on board though. Think back to your pronghorn hunt and those long shots in the wind, less drift would have been nice wouldn't it.

It is not like micro diameter arrows are exactly new. First I saw in carbon arrows were in 98 and were Beamon carbon hunters, bought a dozen of them with the Browning compound, never had one of those arrows stay in a whitetail deer. I knew about smaller diameter arrows before that though, hunted with 1918 al arrows before that. Though not skinny by todays standard compared to the first grade pencil size arrows of the day they were skinny.

As far as bigger game like elk heavier micro diameter arrows or mid sized arrows like FMJ are pretty popular with elk hunters. Though the micros penetrate very well they do not have the momentum to break bone as well as a heavy arrow.

Part of why the micros penetrate targets so well is very little shaft drag in the targets like the block that stop with friction, less surface diameter less friction.

I like the skinny arrows but had a bad experience last year. I am shooting the Victory RIPS. They come with outserts instead of inserts. They are new and the first arrows came with aluminum outserts. First time shooting them at a hog I had an outsert break on a real big pig. Wasn't really sure what happened the first time. Later that season I had a big mature deer come in and I put an arrow perfect behind the shoulder only to have the same thing happen again. The outsert broke on contact and the deer ran off with only the broadhead stuck in him. After contacting the Victory rep they replaced a dozen arrows for free with new stainless steel outserts. I have shoot these at several hogs since and all have been pass throughs with no problems. The penetration is so good with these I have problems blowing through most targets I shoot.

I'm shooting the Black Eagle Carnivores and I'm really liking them. They're not the "micro arrows" like the BE deep impacts but are a smaller than usual diameter. Got them hooked up with HIT inserts and they fly like a dream! Penetration is great

Less friction on the arrow is why they pass through the block, on an animal, KE and momentum will get pass through not arrow diameter

Most micro's end up heavier then thier big counter parts simply because of the use of Mfg XYZ (out/hybrid,etc) cert. on top of that they are normally have thicker Wall construction. The main expectation is the Full metal jackets but the full metal jacket injection is basically with in a .5 grain of its larger diameter cousin..

I like micro, a well tuned micro diameter arrow with a heavy FOC really defies wind. To a point you sometimes over think and over adjust

this one has a 12 grain collar that slides over the end. should have pretty good FOC
