Broadhead for nilgai?

My dad's bow can't shoot fixed blades-at least not the ones we have. He's killed his 2 archery kills with this Z7E using Rage 2 blades. What would you suggest, that flies pretty much straight, for nilgai?

Why cant his bow shoot a fixed blade?

On an animal that size, I would want as much penetration as possible, i.e. a fixed blade. If I had to shoot a mechanical on an animal like that, I would probably go with the Rage Hypodermic or Rage Chisel Tip

Has he tried Montecs? Their smaller surface area normally gives them less planing issues. I know my Z7E was a little temperamental tuning but once I got it tuned it shot any head I tried just find. It did take a lot of time and patience on the paper tune to get it right but after that, no issues.

I kept saying PAPER TUNING!!!!! But the pro shop guy also said the velocity makes it not fly straight with fxd blades. Slick tricks or Montecs? Or QAD Exodus?

Yes, many of these pro shop guys are young and not able to comprehend old school tactics. My Z7E had to have the QAD a lot closer to to the riser than I would have thought to get it properly tuned. But like I said, when I took the time to do it, with a properly spined, unfletched arrow, it made all the difference. Paper tuning requires your form to be very good and sometimes must be done in shifts for as you get tired your form is negatively affected. But the bow in question, with such a short axle to axle has a hard crossing angle of the strings and cables due to off set of the single cam design and thus creates the issue in question.

That's good. They should get it done for you. Just remember, tuning doesn't just help broadhead flight. It improves kinetic energy and penetration as well. Good luck, and remember I want to know the weight of the meat.

Well he decided not to get slick tricks for some reason. He's just gonna stick with Rage 2-blade. Maybe we'll pick up Hypodermics.

Paper tune the bow. You'll get better penetration either way with arrow flying right.

Just paper tuning doesnt necessarily make the bow ready to hunt just gets you close. I don't care how fast it shoots (which isn't close to the fast bows out) it will shoot fixed blades if properly broadhead tuned assuming the shooters form isn't the problem.

Bows should generally be able to shoot both fixed blades and mechanicals if tuned correctly. There was an article recently about the accuracy of both heads, and they weren't very far off at all.

I have been shooting Solid 100gr fixed broadheads. Fly just like my field points. Took at hog at 65 yards this fall. I would think they would do well with the nilgai.

I also shoot the Helix single bevel. Greatness. Would also give great penetration.

I wouldn't personally shoot a mechanical on that big of an animal. But plenty of people use all kinds of mecahnicals on similarly sized prey (elk,...)

Definitely have a tuning issue if your fixed blades won't fly straight, no other way around it. Last thing I would use on a large Nilgai is a Rage mechanical. There are too many fantastic fixed blades on the market, that with a well tuned bow, will fly like darts and penetrate better. I work personally feel confident using a Magnus buzzcut or a QAD exodus on my set up. Both fly like field points and zip thru with full penetration on the deer and hogs I have shot.

Well, the hunt is tomorrow, we may not even go, so really, if we go to the shop tonight, we'll only be picking up Rage Hypos because that's the only thing he's confident with.
